ELK Rifle, best calibre

I'll just relate a quick true story:
When I was 21 I bought myself a brandy new abolt 300winmag for elk, I had been htg in the mountains, 400yd shot needed. Then a draw came up for the more local cypress hills. I contacted a customer of ours that lived in elk country to see should I be drawn would I get permission.
He asked me, "Can you shoot 400 yds?" Me, "Bet your a$$"
He, "What are you shooting?" Me, "300winmag".
He, "Grunt, should have bought a 338. At 400 yds elk get up with a 300, with a 338 they don't get up".

True story. I hunted with a 300winmag 180gr partition for years, now I use a 338, 225gr partition, probably mostly as the guy in the story killed more elk than most people claim to have.

Not saying the op needs a 338, just relating a true story. Take it as you see fit.

Ontario has an elk season.

Yup, And I will hopefully be living there this year or next right in the middle of the best elk zone in the province. My parents are right near Bancroft, a couple of my Dads friends went out last year. Protected? Not since 2011 when they started Hunts. Elk population is booming in Ontario. Could be in Alberta too, but I will much more likely be in Ontario first.

Pretty long odds of drawing a tag but good luck!

No license needed?
And no nonresident season would be one method of "managing", no? ;)

Open means no draw. Walk in to your local store, buy a tag. Hunt any zone that has a season. I don't think any other province has that for elk anymore. It means I hunt elk every year, and it's beautiful.

And yes that's a method of managing. Seems to be the best one. Our deer season is flooded with hunters from Quebec and Manitoba nosing in where they have no permission. At least they instituted draw only for non-residents this year. It prevented the flood this year and should the next as well. It makes sure areas aren't saturated anymore with road hunters.....

Call me grumpy, but thats how I'm getting as people from areas that are hunted out keep showing up here.

Is it still that Hansen buck that gives you guys that attitude? Your deer are nothing special and your elk certainly aren't either. I don't know of too many guys going into SK from MB hunting that are licensed hunters, your deer numbers in the areas non residents are allowed to hunt (northern) that are bordering onto MB are as depressed as here, perhaps worse.
As for elk, I believe both AB and BC have OTC tags, though not in all areas, but they have more elk than you have gophers. ;)

Perfect. Please tell as many people as you can exactly what you just posted. :d

When Ardent asked members to vote for a cartridge that would effectively dispatch ALL big game species in North America (I.e. The Ultimate North American Hunting Round), including elk, moose, bison, grizzly & brown bear and polar bear, most voted for the .30-06. Now, when asked what is best for elk, most want a magnum, when that same .30-06 is plenty. Irony? "A simple way of putting it is that irony usually signals a difference between the appearance of things and reality."

That Hansen buck was something, wasn't it? Very nice animal. :)

Look, sorry if I tweaked you, I just say it as I see it. Elk seem to be the last great bastion left here that doesn't have hordes showing up from out of province to hunt. It's a beautiful hunt for what I consider the best game animal in NA. And since there isn't provinsions for non-residents to hunt them, there's always so little trouble when you're out for elk. As nice as that Hansen buck is, it has flooded us with hunters. I guess I see Manitobans here a lot because once the guys on the west side have shot their Manitoban deer, they buy a Sask tag to keep hunting. And they use the group hunting techniques that Manitobans I understand are allowed to use. Correct me but can't you guys have group hunts? And the guys from Quebec.... they just keep showing up. So many...
