The CANADIAN Ruger Gunsight Scout Discussion Thread

After owning my GSR for 2 years I finally got tired of the rough sloppy bolt and returned it to Snap Shots for warranty. It also had some other poorly finished areas with burrs that needed work. I had read that this was a typical problem in the Scout and just thought mine was the same until I acquired a like new Frontier. I realize they are different but based on the same action. The Frontiers bolt was just so much better. No sloppy play or binding. That is what made me decide to return the GSR. Yesterday I opened my e mail and was pleased to find a message from Snap Shot telling me that Ruger is replacing my rifle. The reason for this is, after polishing the raceways the bolt still runs rough. They feel that the bolt is "too small" thus allowing it to bind. I am happy with Snap Shots service and that Ruger is replacing my rifle. I consider myself a Ruger fan, having 10 different rifles, revolvers and shotguns. Some have been purchased new and some used. Out of ten this is the third to go back for warranty and I still have a Single Ten with tight cylinders to be returned. Overall not impressed.

Almost makes you think they've decided they get better PR for replacing defective merchandise than if they don't let it out the factory door in the first place! Or at least just cheaper than pre-ship inspection. Not encouraging either way.

Here are mine. I put one away in my safe...Next time I opened it there were three...two .308 and one new 5.56....

I had ordered both .308 and 5.56 flashhider models first. I never would have bought the non-flashhider model if it wasnt for the amazing moving sale SFRC had a few weeks ago.
Anyone else that got one at that price knows what im talking about. It's becoming my favorite rifle. It seems to point a bit better without hider.

I see they just released composite stocked GSRs for those who complain that the laminate stock is too heavy. Though they've strapped a silly muzzle brake on it to attenuate the extra felt recoil of that saved weight by the looks of it.

factory flash hiders are coming off mine as soon as things slow down after Christmas. I'm probably going to modify one into a pickle stabber type hider by hacking an inch or so off the end.

Well after getting my ruger scout I decided I wanted to make it all weather. So I purchased a ruger mkII Hawkeye stock and just finished fitting it today. I love the way it turned out and I think it will make a great rifle for wet weather conditions.

Can I ask you a few questions? Where did you get the stock, how difficult was it to fit the Scout to it, and how much does it weigh now?

New Ruger Gunsite Scout coming in early 2015

Synthetic stock and almost 1lb lighter and it looks like a muzzle brake vs flash hider. Looks like a nice little rifle.

Would be nice to see them make space in the stock for a spare mag, cleaning kit or survival supplies !

I look forward to seeing the first person who adds a Karsten or similar Cheek Rest/Riser to a synthetic scout….

Anyone use the ten round polymer magazine made by MDT? Does it work reliably in a GSR?
I had and sold it before I acquired my GSR and it was great quality, light and compact cheap at 40$ IIRC and canadian made.

Range day update:

**Using my own hand loaded 168gr Nosler ballistic tip. Going to be working out a Berger match grade load this spring.

Man I love this rifle. Beaten up in the bush, mud in it, dropped in puddles and muskeg (unintentionally), rattle around on quads and side x sides, take it to the range today and it still holds sights. First group is middle - adjustment, 2nd top left - adjustment, 3rd top right +2 extra shots on adjustments, last bottom right.

If I took more time I am sure I can tighten them up to 1/2" groups (and use a rifle sled instead of just a front rest). The funny thing is how EASY it is too shoot. maybe its just me, but really comfortable, easy bolt, easy to stand with aiming, etc. etc. Who says these rifles don't shoot.

those of you that have LER scopes on them, do you like LER type scopes, because they seem kind of awkward to me and what distance are you shooting at?^^^^

I'm going to pick up a pair of GSR's in .223 and .308... don't want any goofy flash hiders though... my LGS has the .308 sans flash hider, but every picture I have seen of a Gunsite .223 has the flash hider... are they made without? Are they externally threaded... if so, is there a thread cap for them?

To be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of my LER because your field of view inside the magnified area at 7x magnification is quite small. At lower powers (2-4x) it is pretty good in that you can keep both eyes open, but again, the field of view inside of the magnified area is tiny compared to a conventional scope.
