Obscured serial #'s in EE ads

A black jetta with stickers on it? I am not following.

Things that stand out. I had a babyblue car, and Tan Camo car, A car with a lift kit. Basically saying why hide plates when someone can say that Jetta with the talley down the side was being a idiot. I have nothing to hide.

Whats the Issue?

Serial Number Covered - Check
Trigger Lock - Check ( AND UPSIDE DOWN )
License Plate - Check

You forgot to cover up the fact you're a Leafs fan.

It's all fun and games until you get a knock on the door by the leo investigating why your pal was used to acquire illegal arms and/or your gun was in a crime. You protect your credit cards, bank cards, passport info, drivers license. Pal and serial numbers are no different.

I agree about all the cards and documents. They identify you and can be subject to identity theft.

How can someone use the gun you have locked in your safe in a crime by having seen the serial number in a photo online?!

Ghost guns, electo stenciling..... Come on.

What about license plates?

I used to cover up gun serial numbers but I thought Ehhh what could happen. So far so good.

Because a licence plate is linked to your name and address.

And that name and address is now linked to the gun community through a public forum.

Meaning you probably own guns, and members of the general public who work in the privatized vehicle registry system now have a location to go shopping, should they be of that criminal mindset. Or owe money to people of that criminal mindset.

Doesn't happen a lot. But it does happen.

You guys think to much. In all my years I've never heard of such a thing happening. Not saying that it couldn't, but you are giving the criminal mind way to much credit. In my experience, most don't even bother with removing the original serial number much less mark the gun with another. They know the firearm is stolen and it's an offense just to posses it. Having a different serial isn't going to aid them in any way when they are robbing the local 7-11.
The most popular mod is to saw the barrel off and wrap it in many layers of tape. And if it's a handgun just wrap it in sticky electrical tape. Now if someone can tell me why they apply tape this could solve a great mystery.

Simple, because all armed criminals store their guns via Mexican carry (sticking the gun in the front of their pants). The tape serves the triple purpose of increasing friction to prevent the gun from sliding loose at an inopportune moment, ensuring that any sharp edges do not cause serious harm to sensitive regions and finally the most important aspect is that it increases the size of the bulge at the front of the pants.

Lol! I think you got it!

I worked in a commercial crime unit for 4 years. And in a Forensic unit for 6 years. I've never heard of a single instance of any serial number scam or PAL scam. You are far more likely to get skimmed or hacked than someone engraving a serial number on a gun. I've seen a multitude of stolen guns. Never seen one with a serial ground off and a new one applied.

If this has actually happened, I'd like to know about it. Feel free to post the links or the location. Or pm me.

If you have the background you say you do, I'd be surprised if you didn't investigate at least one case of stolen data being used to further commit targeted criminal activity.

Plenty of cases of cars being broken into in one location away from the home, and the home break ins occurring using the documents contained within to identify the vacant addresses. Less sophisticated, but no different.

Here is a case out of ontario where stolen, confidential data was accessed illegally and sold.

Pretty sure a decade or so ago a person(s) was busted for passing off address info to the Hell's Angels when provided with licence numbers.

Your SIN and birth date can be used to steal your house with you living in it if news reports from years past are reliable.

Your firearm ser # is connected to your address in a searchable data base.

Nope, no corrupt (insert profession here) to be found in our great land.

Am I paranoid...YOU BET!

Nope never happen...

Court heard that copies of confidential police files, stolen from an OPP computer, were found in police raids on the homes of Stadnick and Stockford.

The Quebec Hells Angels also managed to infiltrate Quebec’s auto insurance system, where at least one office worker searched addresses and licence plates, for $200 apiece.

One of those they obtained was for journalist Michel Auger, who was shot eight times but not killed.

Paranoid yet?

What does that have to do with someone putting a legit serial on a stolen gun which they obtained by inside information regarding your plates?
Nothing.
I've worked on hundreds of identity theft files. No kidding you need to be safe on line. But link a case with the firearm serial thing. That I am interested in. I really am.
