I've had scores of 30-30s over the years and still remember my first one. A Win 94 with serial #2100200...
At 15 traded my .303 (boat anchor) in on a well used 1894 carbine in .32 Spl - figured I had the world by the tail. Shot it until 2nd year University - traded it for a hand tooled leather purse for my girlfriend - now 52 years later still got the girl and her leather purse AND a replacement for the traded .32 Spl. Along the way acquired a safe full of 1873's 1886's, 1892's and of course 1894's... and life is good!!!!!
I can't say I reach for my 30-30 for most big game hunting. Too many other guns to choose from. Taking a sheep with my dads old '94 (1941 manufacture I believe) was on my bucket list though, and I did so a few years ago. A fine 13 year old ram.

I've bin hunting with my Browning BLR in .270 for years now, and just have purchased a Model 94 30 30 from 1955 two weeks ago.
I cant wait to take it out hunting this year.
What kind of ammo would any of you 30 30 experts use for deer and moose hunting?
Shot my first moose with a 30-30. A "home-guard" one.
My Dad still has his trusty old home-guard 30-30 and the rack is still hanging in my shop, many years later......It was a pretty big day for 9 year old me.
Don't know about the rest of you, but I've always found the '94 30-30 CARBINE a NASTY SHARP recoiling rifle for its caliber! And that WOULD make a big day for a 9 year old!!!!! BUT! in the "heat of battle" it goes un-noticed and no one would admit to a sore shoulder!!!!
The 1894 rifle with 26" barrel in the same caliber is a much "softer" gun to shoot BUT is heavier to drag around all day and not as handy in the bush...
I agree, the .30/30 or .32 special in the 94 carbine is a little obnoxious, "sharp" is a good way to describe it. I think the 20 inch barrel and added muzzle blast make it seem sharper than it is. I have a Springfield sporter in .30/06 that is more pleasant off the bench than a .30/30 94 carbine.
