M1A Precision Challenge 1.5 MOA

I guess Ive been in Ontario too long or getting soft! Went out over the christmas break and couldnt get under 2 inches with either rifle. I think it was the ice build up on the trigger that was the problem.
As usual since its too cold to play at the range I got bored and took both rifles apart.... now I got to get my act, and the rifles back together. I expect that the warmer weather will be here before I finish playing at the rate I'm going so I better get at least one ready!
Norinco now has a Springfield medium weight barrel, USGI gas cylinder, and Springfield bolt that I'm just lapping in now so quite interested to see if I can complete the challenge with it, sure hope so for the extra dollars spent!! The interesting thing is that even with the new barrel and bolt the head space is still about what it was with the original barrel and bolt but it worked great for over 2000 rounds before so we will see what happens.
Rodney.

I gotta get out to the rifle range. I haven't been out since this thread started.

I shot this ten shot group last time out. This gun can do it.

I figured out why the flyer, so next time I'll give it a go.

There's just no rifle range around here.

sweet rifle if I may say so ;)

x2. Always liked the look of the JAE.

I'm hoping to give the 1.5 challenge a whirl again once it's warm enough for me to reload in my garage again. Installed a Blackfeather RS on it, so hopefully I can get more consistency from it than my shoddy bedding job.

I had forgotten all about this thread. Now this closet M14 lover is chomping at the bit for some decent weather. I've got 3 Norc's in the safe (love them) and recently acquired an M1A Loaded which shot about 2-3 MOA with cheap ammo (Norc and some old Czech stuff) and about 1.5MOA with XM80 in a Boyd's walnut stock. I've now set it up in a JAE-100 stock and am really hoping to at least scare MOA with hand loads. I've got a bunch of LC brass, 168gr. SMK's and LC 147gr. bullets and H4895 to work with, and am really hoping to meet this challenge once we get a decent day (the last month of weather here has been terrible!). Come on spring!:p

Those are some nice rifles. I've been hoping to see how some of those rigs perform so that I can justify to my wife the coin for an upgrade. Looking for forward to a renewal of the Challenge when it thaws a bit.

Very beautiful rifle. Great shoot.

Just wanted to point out/ask.... I don't see anything about using a "lead sled" or other aids.... is this supposed to be from a sling supported position, bipod, or what?

I kind of wonder if using a machine rest/lead sled should count... seems a little bit like stacking the odds.

I know it's all for fun... but it's more fun when you know the competition is doing something similar to you

Not sure about anyone else, but I was using a front and rear bag off a bench. I've added a bipod though, so I'll probably be using that (with some dampening material) and the rear bag in future.

I don't think there should be any problem with using lead sleds or machine rests, if people have them, this challenge seems to be more about the rifle's performance than the shooter's. The more human variables we eliminate the better.

I agree with Pop. Any support is acceptable although it raises the question regarding whether we should start another Challenge for off-hand position shooting. This might be fun since it places more emphasis on the shooter than the rifle.

The Rifleman Challenge!

Oooooo that's a pretty rifle! Keep us updated. :)

Ok, fair enough. Just figured I'd see where we stood with it. With this kind of gun, I kind of figured bipod or bags might be ok, machine rest or lead sled really takes the human aspect out completely. But either way, cool to see if the gun can do it.

I wouldn't stand a change with off-hand, not unless we made it a 10-15 MOA @ 100 yards challenge :p and even then, that'd be tough from a standing fully unsupported position. Maybe sling supported while standing.....

Maybe 4 minute of angle prone, will try this but Pr589 (Paul) will have to help me hold the rifle even then.:dancingbanana: I need my rest to keep me steady......my crutch if you will to "take the shake" out of the equation. Yah, I smoke, and drink too much coffee!

I use a 32 power bushnell scope as opposed to others 10 power scope, some have the rifle bedded or use different types of ammo, the variables are all over the place but the end result is the groups attained. That is why we need to show the rifle, the target etc. so we can judge the relevance of the group size to our individual results. No matter how you look at it its apples to oranges but sure is lots of fun making the fruit salad!!!

To revive this thread a little I'm upgrading my 1.5 MOA Challenge result (see post #139). Haven't shot the M305 much since the Fall having been distracted by a new AR but took her for a spin today even though the conditions were frigid. The last tweak was bedding the heel of the receiver into the Blackfeather stock. After 5 warm up shots on a different target with Norinco bulk, I switched to this target using my ol' regular load of 39.5 grains of 3031 under a 168 BTHP.

Net results, Average 1.169" (1.117 MOA), max group size 1.452" (1.387 MOA), min group size 0.731" (0.698 MOA). As Tony has said, these are getting too easy. Will definitely have to take out to the 200 yard line.

Great shooting! Hmmm...those Blackfeather stocks are definitely starting to look like a high-value upgrade.

Damn... That's some nice shootin there.
Now that I've virtually cleared my plate of anyone else's rifle builds other than my own LOL so giving me more time to actually shoot "my" rifles... Coupled with the new job I decided to take so I can afford lots of quality match ammo and reloading components LOLx2
I look forward to this spring and participating in these challenges.
Glad to see you guys are keeping this thread going.
