Re your question. It is the mixing of the types and the last minute getting together of the teams because of the mixing that makes it a beer league event. Not the different types. It ensures that almost nobody shoots together with their common calibers or people. It also ensures that our potential coaches do not have the training they need to compete against teams that shoot together all the time. The teams we are going to go against in the future shoot together all the time in a lot more matches that we will ever see due to our weather unless we travel a lot.
It also prevents evaluation of that people we need to identify for the national teams. We have so few long ranges in Canada that it is a shame to waste opportunities like we do.

I filled out the form, signed the check, walked it down to the mail box. You will have it when ever Canada post decides to deliver it.
I don't know about accommodation's yet, I may camp, I have not put any thought into it, and the Mrs. may want to come and that changes everything.

I think we're missing the original intent here. Teams for the Westerns have historically been mixed. The reason being, everyone shoots. 8 or so mixed teams is preferable to 2 or 3 each FO / F-TR. The event is not formal in any way. 4 shooters, thats it. No additional captains, line coaches, wind coaches etc. It's there more as a late afternoon giggle and bang. As for training, there are specified Team Training events scheduled for both east and west. The Westerns don't have time to start from scratch every afternoon to train coaches, shooters etc. As far as attempting to select shooters for further development from a single event is pointless. Individual results give far better insight.
As far as long ranges go they're availlable in every western province.....just not in BC, sorry Steve.
Call it beer league, what ever. It isn't what we're here for. The individual is what the Westerns are about. The Team thing just lets us shoot a bit more.

It just seems to me to be a waste of an opportunity to shoot as a proper team, that is all. However, we have gone over that before.
The US teams shoot all the time as a team and those are the guys we have to win against. They shoot more period due to opportunity and together which is a huge advantage. A perfect 800 score is tough to compete against!!

Steve - I have to agree with Glen here - the basic idea is that any team experience is better than none. The larger mixed field teams are giving a better experience than a 'pure' 4x F-O or 4x F-TR for now. If we can capture the numbers, an adjustment can be made. We're 10% of the numbers that the USA can put together and have to approach our training differently.
Steve, I know what you mean but where we all live has so much to do with what the Americans don't have to put up with. In any other sport, all our high performance and olympic athlete's live and train in the US. Sucks to be a poor self supporting shooter from Canada but it is what it is. If you feel so inclined, you could fund and support the Canadian Team and have us all live and shoot together all winter in the US. I'd sign up for that!

I have to say that training and shooting as a mixed team is just as good for the individuals and coaches, as shooting with 4 individuals of the same class. How you choose to run your team, and the team you put together every year has a whole lot more to do with your success as a team. The America match is always shot as a split 4 Open/4 F TR, with coaches working both sides and they do just fine.
Our team competitions at the Westerns have been fun and competitive, not just a beer league. The team I shoot with at the Westerns has been the same for the last 3 years, which proves that its up to the individuals to choose to do this, and has nothing to do with whether or not you shoot mixed teams. I encourage everyone to put a team together ahead of time, and shoot with those individuals year after year. Good friendships make great teams. Next year when the Westerns are in Saskatchewan, things can be different. Hopefully the numbers will be higher, and the teams wont have to compete against 2 other teams, but this year we will have 8 teams competing for one ultimate prize.
