A Modern (hunter) update

No need to wait Armedsask, you can use the harder hitting .308 for the coyotes now.

You just have to be patient and wait until two yotes are lined up one behind the other and take both out with one shot "Quigley Down Under" style, makes the .308 more affordable to shoot too.;)

I think I want one of these but I'd really prefer something in a coyote calibre. Hopefully won't be too long of a wait for the Modern Varminter.

I wonder if a MV in 7.62x39 would ever happen?

I might like running a premium quality x39 AR style rifle that can use 10Rd. pistol mag.'s reliably while being NR. All that combined with respectable accuracy (exactly MOA would do) a weight under 7Lbs. a price under $3,000 and you'd really would have my attention, but maybe I'm just dreaming?

For those of you who may suggest an XCR-L, please remember I stated premium quality and MOA accurate, but thanks anyways...

Seriously if ATRS made their MH/MV/MM rifles in calibre's ranging from .223, 7.62x39, .308 plus a few others (like they already do) and eventually some heavy hitting magnums, this would be the only center-fire semi-auto. NR rifle needed for the Canadian market (well except for a few low budget bargain types and maybe some of those silly bull-pup's just to be different :nest:).

Oh yeah Stormchaser and CR5, we all might like some video:cool: to go with that range trip you're talking about, doesn't hurt to ask...

Maybe some pic.'s of the rifles together at least pretty please, cause Stormchaser's MH and an AR-10 would make for some great comparison photos (if you could place the rifles beside each other that would be appreciated) thanks.

Cheers D

Nice gun and good shooting.

I did the same sighting as you a couple weeks back, the 25 yards then out to 100yrds. The 100 yard shots were all high like yours. I assume this is because the bullet is still on the rise (barely started) @25yrds, so it has to be cranked down at 100.

Very nice rifle!!!!

***that rifle has got promise with some hand loads.***

:agree: I hope you reload.

Under 2" first time out with factory ammo would make me a happy guy. Ask the boys at the shop if they did any work on handloads and the 155 A-Max. It'll give you a good place to start. The 155 A-Max is a nice bullet for a 308 semi if you haven't tried them. Another good thing is it's as inexpensive as a .308" match bullet gets, also slightly better BC compared to the HPBT's in the Steel Match.

Honestly i don't care for a Modern Varminter, but a Modern Magnum in 300 Win Mag? Holy cow i'd sell my newborn son for one.

I'm so proud of ATRS and what they did for the canadian market, they have put their testicles on a hot coals for us and the delivered an AMAZING product.

It's close to a 2 hour drive to find crown land around Edmonton.
I'm sure once it isn't a muddy crap hole everywhere he'll get it out to the farm.

He should have another range report tuesday night, the two of us are going shooting tomorrow with a few different types of ammo and we will have my AR-10 with us for a side by side comparison.

nan 1 hour maybe a 1h15 but not a 2hour drive that because you dont know where to look !

Has there ever been a semi platform capable of 1 moa with 7.62x39?
I'm not sure its doable with that round.

Pretty sure I read that Rick said it's after the Modern Magnum, which is probably 3 years away. Would a 6.5 Creedmoor not work better for coyotes? Shoots flatter with less drift.

Very nice Storm! I can't wait to see what handloads will do! :)

I'm very skeptical that the modern magnum will be before the varminter, as the market is larger for the varmint version. I also recall him say that the people who preordered the first run MH's will have first crack at the varminter and that it was at the RCMP for FRT inspection.

Entire platform? Maybe... Some guns out of a batch? Sure. I was getting 1.5 - 2 moa yesterday with a SKS-D and norinco ammo. So I'm sure it's doable with effort like anything else.

You are correct, I read it about 2 months ago and just remember seeing the Modern Magnum is the next project.

Once we have the time after getting the Hunter into full production, the next project in this series will be the Modern Varminter, which if all goes well we should be able to submit a sample to the RCMP in late 2015. Then the Modern Magnum is the next project.
Trying to be realistic here so I would suggest that we may have a Magnum version in about 3 years BEST CASE SCENARIO.
IF the RCMP takes a couple of years to classify each variant, that may drag things on beyond our expectations.

I guess the best answer I can supply is to go with what we know exists and hope that what we want to exist happens in a timely manner.
6 to 12 months is just not a possibility however.

The Magnum will be a much larger undertaking simply due to the fact that absolutely EVERYTHING will all need to be designed and manufactured.
It recently came to light that AI makes an 8 round 338 mag, so that screws us for employing those mags as we had planned to.
