.22LR Precision / Long Range Trainer?

I’ve been interested in building a 22LR precision trainer for a few years. My major draw to this idea is because I have lots of room to improve on shooting in positions other then prone. With my long range center fire rifles I shoot strictly prone.

In the last few years I’ve been watching long range tactical matches and PRS (precision rifle series) style competitions and I would like to start growing my skill base so I can try to compete in one of these matches.

Anyways, my first try was with a Savage MK2 FV-SR. It shot pretty consistently in between 1” and 1.5” at 50 yards with target ammo. I tried all kinds of target ammo and nothing seemed to help. With this rifle I was using a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 scope.

My second try and where I am currently is with an older Remington M540X single shot, with a Bushnell Elite Tactical 10x40 fixed. With my limited use this combo seems to shoot much better then the Savage did. It seems to shoot between 0.5” and 1” at 50 yards.

Federal and RWS were 10 shot groups and the CCI was a 5 shot group.

What is everyone else using for this type of shooting? What rifle’s shoot good? What’s everyone using for optics? What seems to be the best ammo to shoot? Or what doesn't work?

Lets see if we can get an information resource going for others who are interested.

Feel free to post pics of your rifles and the groups you have shot and your thoughts on this subject.

CCI mini mags give me the best results. Thats a Sightron SII 4-16-42

I also have a thicker B.M and rifle basix trigger with a 1.5 Lbs pull.

How does it shoot?

How has that Sightron been? I have a few SIII's and they are great. I've been wondering how Sightrons SII and SI lines of scopes are.

Any chance you can compare the glass of your SII to an SIII?

Sold my S3 for a Nightforce, But I have and S2 and S1 on couple of my .22's, I'm actually thinking of picking up another S1 for my wifes RAR to replace that horrible Nikon P22, For the money they are hard to beat. SII is overkill for a .22 ... lol...

Groups are awesome at 50 yard, after that not so impressive. lol.... Its my most accurate .22 I have, Beats the Ruger American rimfire hands down. beats all 3 of my 10/22's, including the VLEH.

Here is my S1

you should be getting much better results with either gun if you use better ammo. try out some lapua, SK, or eley. with minimags since they are supersonic you are losing a lot of accuracy when they hit the transonic range. and just going with ammo which is much more consistent will give you a lot better results.

if you are looking for a new gun which is better suited check out .17 HMR or .17 WSM. they are much more accurate over longer distances. .17 WSM is going to be much harder to find though.

That 540X outta shoot a lot better than 0.5 to 1.0" at 50 yards. Better ammo and glass would be a great start. SK Standard Plus or Lapua Club are great and not insanely pricey but it's usually a matter of getting what you pay for unless you're real lucky and happen to come across cheap ammo your rifle shoots well.
I've finally got a couple repeaters that regularly break a quarter inch at fifty. I shoot my best with the Izhmash 7-2 with Leupold EFR 6.5-20X40. The one in the middle.

Biggest improvement to the FVSR would be putting it into a Boyds laminate stock, the tupperware original is way too flexible. Check out Rimfire Central in the Savage rimfire section for trigger improvements. Try and get some SK Standard + ammo, I've always had good luck with it. Try as many types of ammo that you can find, when you find one that that groups 1/2" or under at 50 yards buy as much of that lot # you can. As far as scopes for 50 yards and beyond all I use are Weaver T36, Sightron Big Sky 36 power and on my match rifles Leupold Competition 45X.

I have a 17HMR and I enjoy shooting it. I just wish you could buy higher quality ammo. Seems like the velocity consistency just isn't there to make it shoot good at longer ranges.

I'm not going to give in to Savages garbage that they are passing off for a firearm that's chambered in 17WSM.

KOna_stinky, don't listen to the .17 cal hype  That 540 should shoot good with decent ammo. Here a few pics from an Anschutz 54 match with good ammo. 1st pic is 50 metres, 2nd pic 100 metres and 3rd is from a custom 10/22 I built 5 years ago, pic is at 100 meters. Using a .22 at 100 -200 yards will give excellent practice preparing for long distance center fire.

Well those groups are motivating!!

Ive never seen a rimfire shoot like that. I will have to pick up some different types of ammo.

I need to pick up some dovetail to weaver adapters so I can swap scopes around easier. That bushnell may be giving me a parallax error.

Whats every ones opinion on these adapters? http://www.bkltech.com/BKL-1-Wide-Adaptor-Blocks-p/bkl-566.htm

Can you share the specs of your 10/22?

I bought a Savage MKII and slapped on a Boyds Tacticool stock. On a good day without too much wind I can manage 1MOA groups at 100m. I was using a Sightron SIII 6-24x50 but have since swapped it to a Burris MTAC 3.5-10x42 simply because it's in MIL.

My Savage is fantastic but it does feel a little on the cheap side, but the price / value are hard to beat. Every once and a while I think about switching to a CZ but then I think back on how accurate the MKII is and decide against it.
