I’ve been interested in building a 22LR precision trainer for a few years. My major draw to this idea is because I have lots of room to improve on shooting in positions other then prone. With my long range center fire rifles I shoot strictly prone.
In the last few years I’ve been watching long range tactical matches and PRS (precision rifle series) style competitions and I would like to start growing my skill base so I can try to compete in one of these matches.
Anyways, my first try was with a Savage MK2 FV-SR. It shot pretty consistently in between 1” and 1.5” at 50 yards with target ammo. I tried all kinds of target ammo and nothing seemed to help. With this rifle I was using a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 scope.
My second try and where I am currently is with an older Remington M540X single shot, with a Bushnell Elite Tactical 10x40 fixed. With my limited use this combo seems to shoot much better then the Savage did. It seems to shoot between 0.5” and 1” at 50 yards.
Federal and RWS were 10 shot groups and the CCI was a 5 shot group.
What is everyone else using for this type of shooting? What rifle’s shoot good? What’s everyone using for optics? What seems to be the best ammo to shoot? Or what doesn't work?
Lets see if we can get an information resource going for others who are interested.
Feel free to post pics of your rifles and the groups you have shot and your thoughts on this subject.
