I recently purchased a BNIB SIG716 (lets ignore supplier for now). Today I took it apart to totally remove all factory oil and fireclean it. However, I noticed that there is carbon inside, lots of it. It is normal for BNIB rifle to arrive this way from factory? I know they need to test fire firearms before they ship them, but dont they clean after the test fire?

There would only be a minimal amount of carbon if it's indeed a factory new rifle. They shoot, at most, a magazine. Generally though, 5-10 rounds to check function. Not enough carbon would be left over in the barrel for anyone to notice it anyway.

I think you got a "joy rider" AR. Someone definitely shot it a bunch and then tried selling it to you as new.

This is my first AR, so i dont know a lot from little fouling. Based on those pictures (only from wiping the bolt, chamber and carrier, I havent touched the barrel yet) is it a lot (more than one mag) or normal?

This is 16" .308

What exactly do you mean by lots of carbon? You look down the bore and it looks like it's got bits of stuff inside, or you gave the bore a scrub and the patch came out black? Depending on the powder a few shots could leave a fair bit of residue in the bore.

*edit* That does look pretty ugly. From a dealer or an individual?

My first complete AR came brand new but it was obviously test fired and not cleaned. It's normal that factory test their guns before shipping to wholesalers....

AR tend to get dirty very fast.... Even after a good cleaning a few rounds make it all dirty.

Yes the bore looks like it has bits of stuff inside, but mind you I did not touch(clean) the bore or barrel yet. The above picture is from just wiping the bolt carrier, bolt, and chamber.

That's way more than should be present on a new rifle. I'd call up the dealer and ask for an exchange if it really worries you.

I would be pissed off personally if I got an advertised as BNIB rifle with that much carbon buildup just on the BCG alone. That stuff is definitely added after it came out of factory.

Can also be remnants of what ever surface coating or machine oil was applied, is there obvious wear on the feed ramp? Finish worn on the trigger shoe? Other signs of wear? If the fun was fired while it had any fresh oil coating the bolt it would get really messy in there very quickly regardless of a piston or DI.
