Defiance Sierra One .338LM complete! Photos on post 111.

My defiance 338 AI is just finishing up the bedding job and should be out of the smiths in the next week or so!! Barrel finished up at 32" Krieger 1:9.35 twist. It was a little wierd though, the new PTG 338 AI reamers are much shorter throated than they used to be. It ended up with the Berger Hyprid fitting a magazine OAL. Ended up having my smith take the uni-reamer and throat it out for me. Built a single shot for a reason. Seat em long and run it hard!! Should see close to 3100 with Retumbo.

Ended up using a 40moa rail and getting a Recknagel ERA-TAC 70 moa adjustable mount. I have a total of 160moa with my NXS now. 3000m here I come!!

Beautiful rig. Yep, 30" barrel will get those velocities.
Sorry, I meant 7.1 contour and 9.3 twist.

Got out the notes and measured the barrel, the barrel is 30" from recoil lug to muzzle. (Its a 5C also) Velocity was 2856 fps @ 3 degrees C, 90.0gr H-1000, (I did load work up to 92.5gr, ran into pressure at 92.0gr)

Here's a pic for Sask378

What projectiles are you planning for your 7.1" twist?

It's the light tactical(nothing light about it but very stable) LRA, got it from PGW.

For how solid they are, they are actually reasonably lightweight in my opinion.

I only run them on .50's, I like the Atlas on my .338, but I'll have to see how heavy this new build comes in at before making the call on the bipod.

Fascinating mount, never seen one before. You'll have to do a full review of it once you get a bunch of rounds downrange, I'm curious as to how solid the adjustable mount is, and if it would ever wander. I'm paranoid about that kind of thing, I like every nut and bolt torqued down, no room for error, but it would sure be cool if that mount worked.

I've used mine on a .50 BMG since new (over 1 year now) with no issues. If you examine the way the adjustable cant feature is engineered you'll agree that it can never have a zero shift. Leave it to the Germans.... :)

I took the leap and ordered it after seeing it posted on a thread from Shot Show. It appears VERY solid. You do have to loosen the torx screws and retighten it between adjustments. The base sits tight on the flat of a nut that is offset for cant. My buddy has the Coldshot MOAB base with 150moa of adjustment, but I notice that it has some play in it and didnt really like it. I liked that this had integrated rings and the ability to get integrated levels and CDI mounts. My real question is whether or not each setting will be a true moa adjustment or not. IE is 70moa exactly 70moa or not?

Yes I typically prefer the Atlas but at 21lbs the LRA is quite a bit more stable for my rifle.

You make a valid question about whether the moa adjustments would be true to the amount indicated. This would have to be verified. For me the value of the built in adjustment is in its versatility and ability to be able to zero your scope and get the full vertical adjustment possible from it. I dont anticipate using the mounts adjustability to make field changes to gain more come-up, although this is certainly feasible.

If the later is the intented use of this mount, I think a strict re-tightening regiment would have to be adheared to to ensure that repeatability is achieved. Same sequence, same torque values, etc....

Sorry for the supersize pics:

Best of luck on the build sir, it looks like its going to be quite the rifle all together! If I could build a rifle on my dream action, I would. Problem is my action is non existent alone, so I opped out and bought a whole rifle with the action, and I'm no way in hell pulling it apart.

hey bud, looks like a nice project.

read this before going with a long, heavy and useless barrel.

this guy has a 22'' barrel and is getting awesome results. I, myself, would go with a 20'' barrel just like Accuracy International offers. but that's just me.

a shorter barrel will take a bit of weight off, will allow you to get a better balanced weapon and will be easier to handle in the woods if you plan on taking big game with it. Don't forget your ear muffs :):):)

have fun with the built

Yessss!!!!! My Bartlein is here! Big thanks to Hirsch Precision for being so patient with me and answering all my questions, of which I had many haha.

Bartlein .338cal barrel blank. 29" Whitely Palma contour, 5R rifling, 1-9.35 twist.

Came well packaged.

Hard to get a good pic of rifling, but it looks utterly mint as would be expected. I am very pleased.

Next to my 24" barreled Rem700 MLR .338LM.

The weight and length differences won't be a huge issue to me, as I likely won't be packing this rifle around too often after big game. My feeling is I want to leave it long to gain what velocity I can get, as this is going to be a mainly 1000-2000 meter platform. My ideal length would be 26-28", as I would like to see close to 2900fps with 300gr projectiles if possible, that will give me the best chance of really reaching out there to those small, faraway targets if I can find a load it likes. 2-300fps loss at minimum is likely if I drop down to my current 24" barrel length, which I get an average of 2600fps with my current barrel.

I can always shorten the barrel down the road for a hundred bucks in gunsmithing fees, but I can't add length back on. Thanks for the link and thoughts though, much appreciated.

Also put in an order for one of the new TriggerTech roller triggers. The tech seems very cool, and if PGW is adopting it, you know that it is good stuff. For the price I can't go wrong either, if I don't like it, I can always put it on another firearm.

The specs sound very good, super clean break, no creep, no grittiness, I like it.
