I think they're just desperate to appear to fit in with a cool group by thinking that they have to use cool lingo. Like, on car forums, guys will refer to a distributor as a 'dizzy'. WTF? Why?
"Am I the only one that cringes at the term "shotty?""
Unlikely, there are many people that have adverse physical reactions to incorrect grammer/spelling/terminology etc. However, extending this to slang demonstrates an advanced pyschosis that may require professional help.
We've worked hard at teaching safety to our 6 year old daughter while not having her think of firearms as big scary forbidden things.
We put the emphasis the person being in control of the firearm and not the firearm being the culprit when used wrong... the responsibility lays with the hand not the tool in the hand....(wish the rest of the world saw it that way).
So to impart the not scary thing I've allowed my daughter to name all our guns, it was her idea and we went along with it... the first thing she named was our shot gun... Shotty shotgun, she then went on to name my two SKSs Igor and Sochi our .22 is Lucy and her pink BB gun is Pinky Dinky Do.
She knows safety, she knows care and control and she knows firearms are fun but she is responsible for what happens with them when they are in her hands
So yeah love our Shotty shotgun name and love that it implies something less than dark, scary and forbidden.... because its just some wood and metal that goes bang for F sake
Shotty is a common term used by kids that grew up with video games or by newbies to the sport that don't want to sound nerd-like, but can't help being that way due to using words like Shotty!
Same kids that call a hat trick a hattie!
Just like the 50 year old guy wearing a flat brimmed had because Vanilla ice wears one while doing home renovations! He also owns a shotty.
The kid that sweeps the firing line on his first trip out, probably calls his tool a shotty.
On a good note, Jessie James is no longer being gender ambivalent while building choppers, he is now crafting some seriously #####en 1911's!
From the very first day I was qualified on shotgun I have heard it referred to as a "shotty". But now I have this strange urge to use the term "shottie"...
