To say I'm new to the AR world is a huge understatement but I'm looking at getting my first ARTICLE so I'm doing lots of reading and I keep seeing people get really excited about the Colt Canada SA15.7. What's all the excitement about? Who else sells Colt? I like the look of the IUR and the 6940.

Colt Canada (formally Diemaco) is a subsidiary of Colt. They originally built the C7 and C8 for the Canadian military. These are high quality firearms, and were subsequently adopted by militaries around the world, including the UK Special Forces, Swedish, Dutch, and Danish forces. A lot of police forces have also picked them up.

IMHO a lot of the demand is as much due to the Made in Canada nostalgia as the build quality. I think they're on par with Daniel Defense, Stag, and other premium builders.

Note the IUR has an integrated hand guard that can't be changed, and the barrels can't be swapped without specialized tools. I use them at work and find they're muzzle heavy and not balanced as well as other ARs. That said, they're built very well.

Can't change the hand guard? well damn, that might be a deal breaker right there. I was probably gonna try to get one eventually, but that's a bit too "Apple" for me

Well, not on the IUR, that is a special beast made to specific specs. They're slightly muzzle heavy due to the heavy barrel profile and that (in this case) they're 15.7' with a barrel sleeve on the SA15.7, and the rails on the IUR 15.7. Other AR's are medium or light profile M4 barrels, and are 14.5 to 16 (at least in popular lengths). You'll pay slightly more because it's Diemaco / Colt Canada, but well worth it I think. These are definitely not considered budget guns - true Canadian mil-spec used by various allied militaries and special forces around the globe.

Phat Eagle stated the IUR cannot have it's hand guard changed, an IUR is a different upper or rifle then the Canadian Colt SA15.7 you enquired about. As it stands right now there are probably less then a #100 SA15.7 rifles (and likely a lot less) out of the Special release 30th anniversary edition of #490 that were made available to the civilian public for purchase (CC offered a total of #490 SA 15.7 and #490 SA 20 rifles for sale). Many SA 15.7/SA 20 rifles have already had their front hand guard changed for personal preference which shouldn't prove to be any harder to do then on most other AR's.

These Canadian Colt SA series rifles have never been available before and will never be available again as Colt Canada has stated this publicly. We were all hoping for CC's C8IUR rifles to become available later this year, but I fear this may never happen after the close of CC's public forum here at Gunnutz.
Since these CC SA rifles are so rare I would expect their value to climb as the years pass, which is something you can't say about all AR's particularly ones made in the tens of thousands like some USA Colts are.

To say these Canadian made Colt rifles are similar to the USA Colts would simple be untrue, CC has explained in great detail w/o giving away trade secrets that their are numerous details that separate them in quality from many other AR's the world over and the Colt Canada cold hammer forged barrels (something the USA Colts do not have) are among the very best AR barrels money can buy. They are tested to a cold weather limits like no other as one example and have proven the most reliable AR rifle in tests with other leading AR rifle companies. My understanding is Colt Canada SA rifles have a warranty for life to the original purchaser in Ontario, Canada.

Canadian nostalgia or not there are few AR rifles as capable, reliable or as accurate as a CC SA 15.7 or SA 20 rifle and the IUR uppers currently available are even better as they are free floated among other things to be sure.

A Danial Defense is an excellent value, but their cost has increased significantly of late and are now in the price range of the CC SA rifles, while Stag rifles have a warranty for life I believe and KAC rifles may offer more features (ambidextrous controls...).

One other important point when buying a Canadian made firearm like a CC SA rifle compared to a rifle from a foreign country there is no need for the rifle or needed spare parts to cross any international borders making for warranty/repair to be potentially quicker (as in months faster possibly) in the case it's ever needed.

If you have the means I would suggest a CC SA 20 rifle with a CC IUR 16" upper for a great combo (available through Gunnutz sponsor companies Wolverine, SFRC and others), otherwise the suggestions of Phat Eagle are a good place to start.

Stag is considered a premium builder???

I was fortunate enough to buy a Colt Canada Diemaco SA15.7 carbine last year from Reliable Gun in Vancouver, and just installed the dark green Colt Canada furniture on it. It looks great!

I have 2 SA15.7

One is a C8 clone with green furniture

The other one is on the way, I sold the Upper and I will use my IUR on it instead. This was the cheapest way to build a Colt C8IUR

im also worried that Colt Canada will no longer sell to the public...

My thoughts too, I was really looking forward to a CC C8IUR (ie. The Patrol) with a 14.5" barrel, but I'm not so sure that is going to be a possibility now?

I suppose we have to be thankful for having had the opportunity to purchase any CC kit, but if the candy shop is closed for good it's a sad day for all Canadian Gunnutz...

I wouldn't be so hard on them for not making the civilian market a priority. They seem to have a lot of contract with various militaries and they are a small company. So we always were told that it was likely that aside from the special edition run we were going to only see their over runs since they have a limited capacity that had to stay that way for the foreseeable future in order to maintain quality. On top of that a lot of people where gripping at the price and everything not understanding what made them exceptional. Given all that you can't really blame them for not putting a priority on the Canadian civilian market. IMHO

I'm worried about that too ... but can't really justify the SA 20, I'll stick with the SA15.7 and IUR. Would love to have a dedicated CC lower and and BCG.

Its actually cheaper to buy a 2nd SA15.7 then trying to buy a Colt USA Lower Bolt ect ect ect... The Last Colt USA lowers I saw for sale hit 400 US.... And the Colt USA bolt is 220 US...

Thats what I keep telling myself regardless.... hahahahahaha////

I did sell my stripper upper for 750$ so That helped out a lot

I have a colt BCG in the mail and I'm going to get the IUR. So from what I'm understanding , it won't make much difference if I get a colt USA lower or a LMT lower then?

It won't make any difference, unless you want to keep it all CC, but thats up to you. Any quality lower will work just fine on the IUR upper. I'm using a Bushmaster lower on mine, and it just fine, thank you.
