Just curious:
Why do some people need so much .22 ammo?
I've still got some full boxes from the 1960s.
I've got three .22 rifles and take one out once in a while, shoot about 10 shots to see how the rifle works, then put it away for a year or so.
I can't grasp this freak out over the supposed "shortage."

well duh if you don`t shoot you don`t need any ????
Okay, this year is not a banner year for ground squirrels (gophers) but obviously you have never really lived or even merely visited the prairie provinces in the warmer months.
I surmise this by the information in your post.
Two years ago I burned up 500 rounds in one hot summer afternoon on pasture land south of Lloyd. There are many others out here and on CGN that have surpassed that for sure.
PS: Myself I also regularly shoot rimfire pistol at our outdoor range. I use up at least 1500 rounds a year, sometimes even more then that, if I attend or prepare for formal matches.

Some people actually enjoy shooting their guns, unlike you obviously.
I have to disagree with you, Iam seeing more gophers here than I've seen in the last 5 years! since the babies came out last week the ground is crawling!
I presume your .22s are bolt-action or single-shot guns, right? There are a growing number of owners with semiautomatic firearms, high capacity magazines, and do lots of rapid fire shooting. With all those facts added in, it's nothing to burn through a brick/bulk pack of 500 rounds in a day at the range.
I'm just more interested in a few well placed shots with my 7x57 Mauser or 270 at 200 metres than being a spray and pray kind of shooter.
I might have a.22 in the truck in case I see a blue grouse or hare while big game hunting though.
and if by spray and pray you mean shooting 5-shot dime sized groups into paper you might be on the right track.I'm just more interested in a few well placed shots with my 7x57 Mauser or 270 at 200 metres than being a spray and pray kind of shooter.

Spray and pray does not compute here. My favorite rimfire rifle is a single shot Mauser from 1936.
My favorite target pistol is a single shot Hammerli pistol.
That's a coincidence.
MY favourite rimfire .22 is MY single-shot Mauser from 1937 - an ES350B.
What's yours?
