This .22LR shortage is starting to piss me off.

Just curious:

Why do some people need so much .22 ammo?

I've still got some full boxes from the 1960s.

I've got three .22 rifles and take one out once in a while, shoot about 10 shots to see how the rifle works, then put it away for a year or so.

I can't grasp this freak out over the supposed "shortage."

I presume your .22s are bolt-action or single-shot guns, right? There are a growing number of owners with semiautomatic firearms, high capacity magazines, and do lots of rapid fire shooting. With all those facts added in, it's nothing to burn through a brick/bulk pack of 500 rounds in a day at the range.

Okay, this year is not a banner year for ground squirrels (gophers) but obviously you have never really lived or even merely visited the prairie provinces in the warmer months.

I surmise this by the information in your post.

Two years ago I burned up 500 rounds in one hot summer afternoon on pasture land south of Lloyd. There are many others out here and on CGN that have surpassed that for sure.

PS: Myself I also regularly shoot rimfire pistol at our outdoor range. I use up at least 1500 rounds a year, sometimes even more then that, if I attend or prepare for formal matches.

I have to disagree with you, Iam seeing more gophers here than I've seen in the last 5 years! since the babies came out last week the ground is crawling!

Some people actually enjoy shooting their guns, unlike you obviously.

I'm just more interested in a few well placed shots with my 7x57 Mauser or 270 at 200 metres than being a spray and pray kind of shooter.

I might have a.22 in the truck in case I see a blue grouse or hare while big game hunting though.

I could go through a 500 pack with my single shot bolt action in an afternoon.

I think hes a grumpy old man. Its like saying I bought a pack of golf balls in the 60's and never needed more... but I never went golfing.

Spray and pray does not compute here. My favorite rimfire rifle is a single shot Mauser from 1936.

My favorite target pistol is a single shot Hammerli pistol.

and if by spray and pray you mean shooting 5-shot dime sized groups into paper you might be on the right track.

And what? Just because I shoot .22 just about every day with guns just as accurate as your cenerfires and go through a few thousand rounds a year which develops skills I "spray and pray"????? I daresay I could out shoot you any day anywhere if you still have .22 rounds from the 60's that aren't collectibles. I just shows you shoot a lot more with your keyboard than with your guns!

200 meters is still 22lr range.

I enjoy shooting my bolt action 22LR from 25m to 200m

Great trigger time, and you get good by shooting 1000s of rounds... not 10 a year. So yes, some of us shoot actively and enjoy our rifles by shooting large amount of 22LR. And to make it happen, we buy large quantities. Most of my 22LR was bought before the shortage, like most here and I buy when I see good deals (1600 minimags for 120$, and yes I brought friends with PAL to get 2 cans instead of one). Is my ammo stash collecting dust ? Hell no its being shot.

Also have 2 kids, too young to shoot yet, but they'll get there and I want to make sure they get to shoot and enjoy it as much as their dad has been enjoying it for years!

So yes, I need that much ammo, thank you very much

That's a coincidence.

MY favourite rimfire .22 is MY single-shot Mauser from 1937 - an ES350B.

What's yours?

tac

I have that exact same Mauser rifle tacfoley! (But mine had the rear sight robbed and a Walther part replaced it)

Of course we both know that both of us already own, at least one Ruger Old Army.

Strange but too strange, quality is a special thing that gets extra attention from those that know better! ;)
