It seems Type 81 is coming

If it's a variant of anything (highly debateable) it's a variant of the SKS-D. Believe it or not, it was designed to be more reliable than the AK, it has the SKS carrier with a distinct, rotary bolt. It uses no AK parts.
Type-81's are not a direct variant of the SKS-D. It has similar features as a SKS, but still A different rifle.

It has a rotating Bolt for one and different trigger group, gas system is differnt as well.

almost 3 years to determine whether or not it's a converted auto?

or am I missing some fundamental insight...

What kind of mags does this take and does it have a last round bolt hold open?
Interesting rifle.

Pretty sure its standard AK, the originals used a very similar proprietary mag but I believe pretty much all of them can take an AK mag at this point.

Anyway, I think the Type 81 looks better than the nonrestricted VZ58 just off the fact that the extra barrel length to make nonrestricted is almost unnoticeable.

Why can't you guys be happy with the SKS? Best beer can shooter on the market.

They're a great value but probably the most vanilla firearm available.

There's also a certain allure to a gun that's hardly available on the U.S. market.

To determine if it is an variant of a named prohib (ie the AK47), if it is a converted auto, or if it will easily accept full auto parts.

The last one might actually be the challenge. The lab won't approve a design unless they are satisfied that full auto parts won't fit. If they can't get the parts, or compare it to a full auto version, they won't classify it as NR or R, they will tag it as "Prohib, pending further information or comparison".

Like I said....

Which part. The dirt part, or the part where you said you are right in all your predictions?

I actually just learned that "dirt shooter" is a term defined on Urban Dictionary.

A Valmet, a RPD and a Type 81 LMG would make for a nice range day. While I like the fact they have lengthened the carbine barrel for our NR market, the standard LMG specs have a 20 or 22 inch long barrel already.

I'd get one of each.
