Symbol of the Siege of Vukovar:

Imagine being a member of a unit tasked with holding a structure like this. The stuff of nightmares!

The water tower was hit by artillery over 600 times during the siege.

I am not sure if I would like Dr. Bethune were I to have any dealings with him. Nothing to do with him being a Communist or womanizer.
I doubt if many of his patients planned to go on a fishing trip with him - they were probably just pleased to be alive. A lot of Canadians were called communists in the 20's and 30's -- it is because they objected to seeing union workers beaten half to death by policeman with ball bats when they went on strike to demand a living wage. Of course the coppers would collect their bottle of rye from the company owner for their patriotism. Small (and some large) company towns lived in fear of the owners. As for being a womanizer - it may be politically incorrect but I have always admired that more in a man than the guy who chases the same gender. Besides he was in good company with Mao - neither of them could keep their wicks dry too long. But as any Doctor would know - it is nature's opiate!

apparently the principles of a "reverse slope defense" were unknown! Its why amateurs should never wage war -- they get too many people killed.

Moving and piling dead horses still in their harnesses .... yeah, right. Ever deal with a large moose or bison carcass?

It would take a forensic analysis to prove it either way. That famous picture of a Spanish soldier falling after being struck by a bullet was thought to be a fake. Recent forensic analysis proved otherwise, one of the clues being the 'body language', particularly of the hands and head. There was no action to minimize the effects of such a fall to indicate a staged fall.

I've moved several moose and know exactly how difficult it can be. I have also moved dead horses in harness and if you have the right equipment such as live horses in harness it isn't that difficult. Do you really think any LIVE horse would just lay down with people between its legs and other horses piled on top of it without trying to kick the hell out of everything close by. Even the best trained cavalry mounts would only put up with so much. Also, did you notice how clean those defenders were in the photo?? They may be that clean for a few minutes but after the first round is fired they grunge up pretty quickly.

I think it would be worse with a air strike in WWII era than modern era. Modern air strikes go for specific targets, WWII ones target the whole area. Also in WWII they liked to use such things as firebombs, vs now were we prefer smart-guided bombs and missiles and only use enough to accomplish the job (especially considering the cost of a modern missile or bomb). Overall I don't think you can really beat a airstrike like the ones that hit Dresden in WWII, unless you are comparing that to places like Hiroshima.

Tell that to a country like vietnam, where they dropped more tonnage on that tiny country than all nations of ww2 combined, without guided munitions.

Modern carpet bombing would be way worse, the amount they can drop if they wanted to is tenfold greater. T

I read a book co- written by Chuck Horner (commanded the air forces during '91 Gulf War). They had so many bombs left over from Vietnam that they used up the leftovers bombing the Iraqis.

The reason I didn't like Bethune is that he is a designated hero in a foreign country & I never heard about him here. I suppose though, that in a way, that is something in his favour. If a Cdn. has done well abroad, then he must have been doing something right.I also have no problem with him liking having guilt free fun with women in the sack nor his like of material comforts. I suspect the person who originally mentioned him learned about him in social studies class, though.

Also #### Canada of the 1930s. I suspect that many of the mealy mouthed Cdns. who dearly wish to return to those times might reconsider if a classical time machine were available for them to live out their fantasies.

I have no info on whether any units were stationed up there for combat. To my mind, maybe one or two lookouts due to the obvious drawbacks of using it as a fighting position.

I dunno, maybe the Donetsk Airport combattants would have some things to say about defending a position with a tower, like maybe they were ordered to defend the airport by their superior officers, with the control tower taking so much artillery fire it eventually collapsed. (???)

Speaking of the control tower:

Water Tower? I thought it was an air traffic control tower.

OK, you win. The dead horses were piled up on the one raising it's head by other horses. That or the fighters took a break from the fighting to stack the dead horses as a barricade. Or perhaps the whole damn thing was a staged photo-op ..... We'll never know.

Obviously you have never seen an animal that has slightly bloated and has had rigor mortis set in. In all honesty, I know and that's plenty good for me.

Yes - I see now.
