So I think I need a fast 30... just because...I don’t have one

To keep the cost down I was thinkin, maybe I can just re-chamber something? Being a lefty, the options to purchase are limited...Being a single shot fan makes it even slimmer pickins..
Looking through the cabinets I found a B-78 in 30-06 that I don’t shoot. I bought it because the price was right and it had a 26" octagon bbl: for whatever reason I just don’t like the 30-06 calibre. Tried a half dozen or so, just not for me. It has a custom left hand stock set and a lovely octagon bbl. Both the 308 NM and the 300 H&H will clean-up the 06 chamber nicely without a bbl setback. For brass, neither is common but can be found for a price. Brass for either can also be made from more readily available cartridges. Overall rifle weight with scope would be around 9.5 lbs. Twist is x12", according to factory info. I want to shoot 180-200 grain bullets.
So...if it was your problem...which calibre and why

308 Norma Mag and the reason.......... I own one.
Remarkable round.
Too bad it was named Norma Mag instead of Winchester Mag.
The following may have been far different.

I have both and like both, the Norma has the performance edge over the H&H.
However if I had to choose between the two which might be soon, I will keep the H&H for sure..

After looking back at my last post I have to admit that I am biased, having used the H&H since the late 1960s.
And it has been a faithful, reliable companion...

Lets muddy it up more.....Norma mag. Both are reloader only calibers, because of lack and price of ammo. Between the two, NM brass would be easier to source. Not cheap.

To even further confuse things, i would think that the 300 WSM would be ballpark performance wise, maybe a bit behind the NM. Brass would be very cheap compared to the other two.

Cant believe i said that. Its not a 50 year old obscure caliber, why would i want one??

Starting out, my first big game rifle was a 303Br 'sporterized' Simpon-Sears special. A short while later, I upgraded to a Parker Hale in 308 Norma Mag. It looked new and pretty and I was curious as to why the guy would sell something that looked that good. He informed me, "because I got this" and showed my a Schultz & Larsen in 308NM. I promised myself, one day...... . Years later I purchased a very nice Winchester model 70, in 300WM.

This I gave to a friend, when I finally found my Schultz & Larsen

And, it shoots very well.

I've posted this info in past, but, seeing the three cartridges on the front of the old Norma reloading manual, I decided to make the three, in Schultz & Larsen, my only effort at a 'collection'. From the top down;
- A model 68DL in 7x61 S&H
- A model 65DL in 308NM
- A model 68DL in 358NM
Apparently, these three cartridges were a co-operative/joint effort between Schultz & Larsen and Norma.

thinking about getting the wife a .308 something used nothing crazy expensive. Whats a good brand let me know your thoughts its greatly appreciated

Ya i have to give myself a thumbs down on talking about the 300 WSM. Who would want the fat girl, when the sleek athletic ones are standing right there. But ballistically they would be close. Dont know if one could load the short mag to the norma, it relies so much on the proprietary powders that we cant get.

My vote is H&H because I think it's the coolest cartridge around next to the 45-70. The last 3 gun shops I've wandered into have had Horandy 300H&H brass on the shelves. And it was a reasonable price too.
