What options are there for a 16" Winchester 92 or 94 in .357?

Guys,

I need some help finding a short lever action.... It should be something like a .357 Winchester 94 Trapper, but I'd prefer a 92 action. The gun will be for plinking only. No hunting (so doesnt need to be .44) and no CAS. The gun must have a round barrel and stock like a trapper not with a metal cap on the fore stock. Ideally no cross safety, I could live with it though. Tang safety is doable

Price point $700-$1000, so it rules out the super fancy italian replicas ...

I was looking at a Rossi 92 but for the $730 plus tax it sells for I still have to polish the action and loading gate and do whatnot tweaks, which either is a PITA or costly. The other option is a Winchester 94 Trapper which I can probably lift of the EE in mint condition for nearly the same cost and it wouldnt need any messing around but has the 94 action which isnt as good for pistol rounds. Could probably live with it as it seems they feed .357/.44 reliably ...

But I wonder if there are any other options? It seems Winchester Miroku makes a 92 but it has the long barrel and the wrong fore stock. Are there other options that are available here? Before I place an ad in the EE I want to know what to look for :)

Thanks :)

Matt

The 94 trapper is still a big and heavier gun than a 92.

WOW! Have the prices on Rossi 92's EVER gone up! ! ! ! ! Only a bit over a year back they were about $625!

I know it's a lot more money than it used to be but if you get one like the last two that I was into about a year and a half ago they were already slicked up inside. So to get it into full trim with a delightful trigger pull you only need to buy a $30 spring kit from Rusty Wood Trading.

And there is simply nothing out there that sits as nicely on the shoulder and feels as balanced as a 20" round barrel Win '92 rifle. The 16 is a touch back heavy. And if I was able to easily feel how back heavy the 16" was compared to my 20" then where's that leave the Mare's Leg with shoulder stock conversion?

Truly though? If I were paying $730 plus taxes for a Rossi with the less than shiny polished bluing on the receiver and the grainless mystery wood stocks I'd be seriously considering paying the $500 or so extra for a Miroku made Winchester. For the extra money you get nicer workmanship and far nicer wood. I'm not sure what you have against the nose cap on the fore arm but when the difference in shelf price is now only around $400 to $450 there's something to be said for a firearm that looks that nice. Mind you I've yet to see a Miroku rifle of any sort here in Canada in my local stores.

P&Dent has a Chiappa 1892 trapper (16") in .357 for $875. I've had one for a couple of years, no complaints other than the loading gate spring being too strong IMO. Only safety is a half ####. Round barrel, barrel band carbine not short rifle.

Browning b-92 would be great if you find one on EE

Thanks! This would be a good choice ... looks like unobtainium though ... could be imported from the US but I can only find 20" versions. Did they make 16" as well?

it looked at their website, it seems to have an octagon barrel and the fore end cap. Both are the most revolting things on a gun IMO ...

The Rossi would be ok for $400 ... but with taxes its $830 and then needs to be slicked up and re blued after slicking ... this seems way over prized and PITA ... But I think I will fondle one at the local gun store and see how bad they really are ...

The Miroku seem like nice guns but probably also unobtainium and the price is a bit steep for a plinker ....

There is nothing wrong with the cap itself, its just that for me a lever action must have a round barrel, full length mag and a barrel band. Everything else just seems wrong (to me)

Looks like my model is gone from their current lineup. Might be worth a call to check which model it really is.

I don't like that loop either but I think my old eyes would love that Skinner peep sight.

The rear sight be an XS ghost ring unit & the lever is a mid-sized unit I reshaped from the stock one to better suit a gloved hand.

Kambowdian Tyre locally has a four day sales event with the Rossi Ranch Hand
on sale.
$100 off........sale price $599.99.
.44, .45 and .38 for choices.

I think these were on sale when they first opened up their gun cabinets for $499.99.

There's really nothing to reblue on a Rossi after the slicking up work is done. Any shiny spots made from stoning and polishing are all internal. But yeah, I hear you about the price. I consider them a decent value at the original $600 to $630 that they used to be. At their present price and given the very dull looking mystery wood used for the stocks they simply are no longer a defensible value for the price.

Chiappa? I know of 9 folks locally that have or had Chiappa arms and all 9 had functional issues with them. So when I read about folks that are happy I can't help thinking that they are the lucky ones. So my first thought is to suggest against them. Pretty guns to look at but they need to learn to balance off their time allotment a bit more to the internal and functional details and not take so many shortcuts.

I hear you. I have a Chiappa M1-9mm as well. Can't get get that POS to run reliably period. The trapper on the other hand I have no problems with (now that I've learn to watch my fingertips when feeding it).

the loading gate has razor sharp edges that should be smoothed a bit.

I looked a a Rossi today, its better than I thought but still feels a bit overpriced :(

Looks like it comes down to a Winchester Trapper or Rossi ...

Are the 94 actions really noticeable bigger and heavier than 92 actions?
