Will be hunting public land for the first time, worried about 2 things.

1) bullets coming from every direction
2)walking threw someone else's hunt and them being PO'd about it

I understand it's crown land so if someone walked by my stand I would understand.
Anyone have any stories of confrontations? Maybe you came across other hunters and helped them or they offered to help you ?

Just use your head .be nice and don't be afraid to stop for a chat.If yoy pull up and see a few trucks parked just move on to the next piece. .Dutch

if we see vehicles parked, we move on, never just park there and walk in, someone else is in there ahead of you. It would be rude and ignorant and be very very unsafe. Some folks do shoot at noises in the bush!

One time my youngest son was hunting alone on crown land and downed a rather large buck. He forgot to bring the ramps that day. He was having a heck of a time trying to load it up and a fella with a heavy duty English ascent happened along and if it wasn't for him, I don't know what my son would have done.

Be aware of and courteous to other crown land users - not everyone out there is hunting, and it's important to leave a good impression of hunters / hunting to non-hunters, especially with the Libs taking power again for the foreseeable future.

Wear some blaze orange when you are on crown land. I would at minimum have a bright orange hat on and if your area is really packed with hunters put a vest on as well.

I do believe that is a law here. Not sure about private land though

A few years ago my brother and I were deer hunting on crown land quite a ways north of Havelock, Ont. We parked the truck and went into the bush maybe a few hundred yards to sit around and also do some still hunting. A while later I heard a dog barking and it was coming our way. Then I saw a hunter coming behind the dog. Then I heard cursing, very loud. Something to the effect of "hey, we're driving deer, what the phuc are you guys doing here". As he got closer I could see the rage in his face. He was absolutely furious and was right in my face. I told him to calm down. I told him we were on crown land. We all have access to it. I told him we had no idea this guy and his crew were going to come along, just as he should have known there could have been someone else there. It almost came to violence until his buddies showed up to calm him down. We then left the scene and returned to our truck for a break. Not 10 minutes later 3 pickups showed up and...yep...here jumps this Ahole out of his truck and once again frothing at the mouth saying the same BS as before. My brother and I again rather firmly told him exactly what we told him before. This guy was DANGEROUS. And he had a gun????
Well he jumped back in his truck and took off. Then one of his buddies came up to us very calmly and respectfully and apologized for his buddy's attitude. Now get this! He said his buddy was pissed off because he had not seen a deer all week. We couldn't believe it. This guy was a hunter? That's scary knowing there are these types out there.
Having described this I have encountered many other hunters on crown land and have had nothing but great discussions ,helpful hints and just good all around camaraderie...probably like 99.9% of the times.
So enjoy crown land and just be respectful of others.

thanks for sharing! Not all ends well for mouth frothers in the bush! That's a very dangerous thing to do. One never knows whom one is dealing with. Beware of strangers!

I always hunt crown land, never had an issue. I don't park my truck in the middle of the road, or block trails.

if I'm hunting and someone else whats to pass me and hunt the trail further up, thats fine by me. I don't still hunt so I move along like the animals move along.

Most of the time, once I'm off the road I see very few hunters. actually this last week I saw only 1 other hunter on a quad back in the woods, all the rest were in trucks.

and I got 2 deer :)

I hunt Crown land in MB. Never had a problem like Amber2010 was talking about, but there's A-holes in any activity. The advice here seems good to me.

One thing I'll say is the deeper in you can get the better as a lot of areas are clogged with road hunters driving pickups around. Enjoy!

This is what I'm hoping to avoid, if I was going with my buddies i wouldn't be worried because I know they'd ring a guys bell if someone got in their face, especially if they came back again with the same attitude.
I will most likely be going alone or trying to get the gf her first deer, not exactly the best scenario If a d bag hunter comes along

I've been on crown land, in some busy spots. If you see others in the area, just move along, if you'll be near by just let them know where. And if you're with a party just establish a quadrant and direction of fire (use land marks) .. no big deal, but if you have any doubts, move on.

I'm fully aware of the curtesies and unwritten rules. I'm not worried about myself doing harm.

It IS public property, and you have every right to be there as much as anyone.

I have seen tree stands put up beside a road, and the guys in them PO'd because I drove by. Bad choices on their part do nat make a problem that I feel I have to solve.

If you run into anyone in the bush, be polite, swap info, move on. Easy! :)

Cheers

I've hunted alot of land both crown and private and never had bullets whizzing all around me. Have had a a couple morons in the marsh think shotgun pellets don't travel beyond the edge of the decoys but I just set them straight about it. Just use your common sense and be visible.

maybe quarter it out? just a thought.

Is "road hunting" being done a lot or is it just something seen near cities? Someone was telling me that a certain fellow we knew, only hunted from a truck,
while driving along bush roads until a deer was spotted and then he would get out and take the shot. How common is this? What is the feeling about it?
Is

^ it is quite common. If he keeps his rifle unloaded while in the vehicle and gets out to shoot and does not use the vehicle as a rifle rest, and they are not numbered or maintained roads and are indeed bush roads/trails as you say, well............ it happens!
