Shooting ducks on the water? :)

Why should this sport somehow be exempt from the concept of sportsmanship, and when did the idea of hunter ethics become something that cant be discussed because we afraid of being seen as judgemental.

I feel confidant saying that a pit lamping Indian is not a sportsman, not a steward of the land and is most certainly not a gentleman.

I was raised that sportsmen shoot birds on the wing...anything less is not fair chase.

So how YOU were raised should dictate how I or anyone else should hunt?....

And your moral compass should dictate where everyone else's should point?

Congratulations on becoming a liberal..... And yet strangely alluding to their flawed thinking.....

Son, I am not dictating to anyone...in that I am not calling for any laws to restrict anyones behaviour.

I am passing along a view of sportsmanship that has existed for generations and encouraging people to live up to the high standards that were set by the best men in the generations that went before us.

You can spit on that heritage, ignore it and do whatever you want....young men blessed with plenty of intelligence and a paucity of wisdom usually do.

In your "opinion". I can go back to the 1600's on this soil by family tree, and they were gentlemen by any standards. People like you that feel wing shooting only is superior to a good clean kill to bring meat home for the family should stick to skeet, trap, clays, or Nintendo and stop trying to paint others as immoral or poor sports.

And you say you aren't dictating or not calling for any laws, but if there was a vote amongst hunters it's obvious you would vote in favor of your beliefs and not for the respect and freedom of others to choose.

FYI, I am 41...... For what that is worth...

I grew up working on farms....

Let me enlighten you (if your mind is open to enlightening)... And that is not meant to insult you, just my general observation...

People need to eat to stay alive.....thats just a fact that neither of us can debate.... That "water duck" you didnt shoot has to replaced somehow in your diet...... Maybe with a chicken breast? Or substitute the meat of your choice..... Whatever....

I worked on a chicken farm..... The birds were born and raised in less than 4 square feet each...... They were constantly injected with hormones and shortly after birth, their breaks were ground down to a nub so when they were actually turned loose in the yard, for the purpose of growing, they wouldn't peck each other.....

Ethics are important........ But perspective is important as well....

Shoot birds on the wing.

Dont put ketchup on steak.

Dont mix coke with single malt scotch.

Dont take the last beer, and the last slice of pizza....take either one, but not both.

These are all moral judgements, and I dont want to make any of them law....its your steak and your pizza after all and the state has no place in the kitchens of the nation.

But think about it....do you really want to be the guy with no class?

Were the people using punt guns un sportsman like? They seemed to think it quite sporting to sneak up or draw a flock of ducks in on the water and blast them all while swimming.

Order more pizza than you need....

Keep lots of beer on hand, it will never go to waste (trust me)... But get your brand, if they are snobby enough to not take freebies they bring that #### on themselves.. And should bring their own...

Scotch is an acquired taste.. And 75% of those that drink it and claim to be aficionados would drink washer fluid and provide a detailed critique....

Buy more beer than you need.... Yes, I said that but requires emphasis... unless you are young and on a budget, in which case I suggest labatt 50... Ensures nobody will want to steal / take your beer.....

Shoot every duck you see and save a chicken from a horrible life...lol

I shoot Ducks on the water,Deer on the run , Coyotes on a dead run, Turkeys in the roost, Grouse on the ground,Coons sleeping in trees and if i can get a Pheasant on the ground that is a bonus. The sportsman of the past are these the same ones that were into market hunting?

My Grandfather was one of the best hunters and mentors I ever had and I never once saw him shoot at a grouse on the wing. I shot one that flew when we were hunting one day and he turned to me and said "geepers let it land and go after it then shoot it in the head, you'll fill the breast full of pellets shooting it in the air". Never in all my years have I considered him a sportsman? I considered him what he was, a true blue gentleman and a hunter and a damned good one at that.

You are a seriously narrow individual... and quite apparently, finding it difficult to see the world through anything but you own rose-coloured glasses.

Market hunters using punt guns were most certainly not sportsmen, nor were the professional buffalo hunters, whalers or sealers.

All of them were hunting for a living, not as a hobby. Totally different thing.

effinggoof, you're not alone in thinking that there is so much more to the spirit of hunting sportsmanship and conservation than just killing stuff any way you can or are legally able.

I am one. I would not hunt with a person that was shooting ducks or geese on the water or standing in a field unless they were disabled, under 9 or over 80. If you need food that bad there are food banks.

How would you know if the ducks or geese were disabled? Do they have tiny wheel chairs? hahaha, how could I resist!

hehe, I did on an earlier post that I do shoot crippled ducks on the water.
