So the general consensus is the Vanguard S2 is the best of the budget rifles ?

This is the low Talley rings on two of my VGII's (one set is the Wby branded, made by Talley and the other is right from Talley).

These are LOW rings which they say is good for up to a 42mm objective.

The first scope on my sporter is a Burris E1 3-9X40, the second is a 3-9X42 Redfield on my synthetic. On the second pic you can just see a sliver of light between the scope and the cap (a Butler Creek flip up) - so a 42 mil with cap will "just clear" the barrel with their low rings (if you want the scope as low as possible).

My gun partner and I bought six blaze at WSS for resale, but if you guys don't keep quiet, I'm going to have to keep the 30-06 for my self. At $440 w/tax, I couldn't go too far wrong. Get a can of paint, a decent scope, and I'm set. I would lurk for a nice walnut stock, too. :)

I picked one up of the Blaze Vanguards in 308. I was planning on painting the stock but the look is starting to grow on me now and I might leave it as is.....
I am thinking I should of grabbed another Blaze in 223 !

Remington 700 scope mounts will work on the Vanguards, but if you look at the specs for them compared to ones specifically for the Vanguards, the rear mount on the Remingtons is about .008" lower than the Vanguard rear mount. I have a set of Talley lightweights on my 243 for a Remington, and found this height difference on Talley's website, but couldn't find any Weather by specific ones locally. I shimmed the rear mount and locktited it one the rifle. And if your looking for a one piece rail, a Remington long action works on the long action Vanguard, but a short action Remington won't work on a short action Vanguard.

This is great to know. Thanks for the information.

Same barreled action so same twist, same 2 stage trigger and 3 position safety, different cocking piece on the Howa (more robust), no knurling on the Howa bolt knob or milled lines on the bolt body plus it's all blued, and the finish is a more traditional semi-polished blue vs the flat grayish/black on the vanguard. 22" howa vs 24" vanguard barrel.

The nice thing about the Howa's as well, if you don't like the stock offerings on the Vanguard II and are prone to "Boyd'ing" it, Howa has a Thumbhole stock standard (Legacy rep told me it's not a Boyd's but I sure couldn't see any difference) on their "classic laminate thumbhole sporter" model (same trigger and #2 barrel as the Vanguard II).

They also produce a Varmint version with a #6 contour barrel (again, thumbhole stock) - and with a #6 barrel you could shoot all day (almost) without it getting hot enough to start effecting accuracy.

That ship has sailed....Cabellas has a few left at $550 but not in .223.

Frontier has the Howa on for $529 in .223....same gun, different stock and finish.... http://frontierfirearms.ca/howa-223-rem-synthetic-stock-22.html
I like the Howa versions personally.

Just wanted to make a note that the frontier Howas have the hogue hard nylon stock, same shape as the overmold, but stiffer and the stippling is quite grippy. Out of the 3 I have now, I like this stock the best out of the cheap stocks. Better feel and stiffer forend then the vanguard blaze unit which is probably the cheapest stock I've ever seen. The hogue overmold isn't bad for fit, just a bit flexy in the forend.

as a quick comparison;
my dad picked up a Vanguard in the spring in 223 ($525) for a build he was doing to compete against me, nice gun, love the bluing and the fit and finish. he hated the stock and picked up a Boyd for it.
i picked up a Ruger American in 223 for my build, Predator model ($499). nice gun, same price as his Vanguard.
i have a Savage Axis in 243 ($450) already in the safe.

so out of the 3 listed above the Vanguard wins hands down for quality, fit and finish and accuracy.
you cant even compare the quality and fit and finish to the Ruger and Axis, lets be honest here.
and the V2 comes with a written guarantee for MOA accuracy from the factory out of the box.

that said i have a easier time getting accessories for my Ruger then he does for his Vanguard.

but i like his so much im gonna pick one up in 243 to replace my Axis.

hope that helps!

Hard to argue with the price I paid $399 for the flamer in 223 last fall.
Yesterday I lucked out and scored a 243win in Kryptic Thypoon for $525 @wholesale
Not many deals left with the higher us $ but there out there if you look.
