Which one is cheaper to buy retail ? Is the 7mm-08 as easy to find as the 308?
Will the 7mm-08 rem drop any big game in Ontario?

I would be willing to bet there is more .308win ammo out there available than the other.
If recoil is an issue, go for the littler one.
 
.308 ammo is more readily available. Both are great calibers and I have each. You'll have a slight advantage with moose using the .308, only because of bullet selection ( weight and variety). If you reload then a premium monolithic or bonded bullet in the 7mm 08 will make the point mute.
 
I hunt moose now (in Northern Ontario) with a 7.08 - I'm turning into a recoil pussy as I get older - moved down from a 30.06

A 7.08 is enough for any game animal you will hunt in Ontario and it's easier on the shoulder than a 308.

But, I chose the 7.08 because I reload myself.

You pay a massive premium for the "less popular calibers" (25.06, 7.08, 280 Rem etc) and the choice is extremely limited if you can find any on the shelf at all compared to 308 or 30.06

As far as "cost of the rifle", there is no difference that I am aware of in rifle prices. A 700 Rem in 7.08 or 308 costs the same (and replace Rem 700 with just about any model from any Mfg). With some models you pay a slight premium for a long action over a short action, but both calibers you ask about are short action (308 is the parent of the 7.08).

Also, you have a much greater range of models chambered in 308 compared to 7.08 - everybody chambers in 308 - 7.08, not so much (but still relatively popular).

If you are going to buy your ammunition "off the shelf", forget about the 7.08 and get the 308.
 
308 ammo supply outnumbers 7-08 by at least 50 fold. Ballistically, 7 mm bore is superior and bullets have better SD (= killing power) than equivalent 30 caliber.

If you target shoot more than hunt, buy a 308. If the opposite, then the 7-08. I have killed cow elk with 7-08 at 300 yards with proper shot placement.
 
Ah the old .30-06 vs. .270 debate in a slightly modified form.

Both cartridges are excellent choices for Ontario game at any normal hunting range.

.308 has larger selection and less cost ammo wise. Quality 7mm08 is not hard to find though.

I own both, I think the 7mm08 is the better hunting cartridge though.

Most 7mm-08 ammo on average will be more expensive due to availability, .308 does have bulk and "lower" quality options.

Which one "works" better , flip a coin.

A box of 140 grain Blue Box Federal in 7.08 = $57.99

A box of 180 grain Blue Box Federal in 308 = $24.99

A box of 140 grain Green Box Remington in 7.08 = $39.99

A box of 180 grain Green Box Remington in 308 = $28.99

(and the 7.08 is just a 308 that has the neck reduced to 7mm - go figure)
 
7-08 shoots a bit flatter, slighter less recoil and will get the job done.

Other than that, hands down .308 all day long.

Less materials in the 7-08 so this makes perfect sense. :)

Only until (whoever they are) "reorder" and pay the US wholesale with Canadian bucks.

I would suggest that it's time to stock up on ammo for two reasons - the first being the price is heading way north due to the buck - second, if it looks like Hillary is going to win the election as we get later on in the year, guys south of the border will go back into uber-hoard mode and nothing will be shipping north.

I have been trying to source all the ammo we plan on selling this year NOW so I get the existing stock at the old price. I won't be at all surprised if you can't find a box of "anything" centerfire for under 40 bucks a box by the time hunting season rolls around in the fall.
 
Try ammo prices in Aus..

up north I paid $52 per 20 fed 150s, down South I paid $37 per 20 for same blue box...

308 on average is say $30-35 per 20 .


308 for cheaper easier to get, CDN does differ with 708 popularity though
