Best method to mail a sold pistol

What if something happens within the delivery ? Let's say the package is open and your handgun has been stolen somewhere in transit period (yes it hapenned), Canada Post's basic reliability for package is $100 only, good luck for having back the remainding value $$$.

Yes you are right of course. There is always an off chance, so I guess i'm taking a calculated risk. From what I've been told, the signature dramatically reduces the chance of something happening because it introduces more direct accountability and insurance does not cover what most think it does.

Totally agree with you :)

I have shipped a tonne of them and they have all been shipped expidited or express with canada post with a signature in a wrapped box with nothing to indicate what is inside as nobody needs to know including canadapost!! i have had zero issues this way not one problem

I never get insurance. Signature required will pretty much guarantee the gun gets to it destination as the CP deliverer cannot just drop it at a door. Once you have received or signed for a package, it is almost impossible to make an insurance claim because it is impossible to prove you didn't cause the damage.

Not true....I always ship with insurance, tracking number and signature required. I shipped out a $700.00 NR rifle and it got lost. Had I not had insurance I would have been out $700.00. It took about three weeks to get my money from Canada Post after I initiated the claim.

Also I would suggest packing it really well! I always try to over pack and tape it up that it covers pretty all the surface area. If the packaging rips much higher chance of it getting stolen IMO.

Once I bought a pistol and apartment superintendent signed for my package (good people so I don't mind, saves me the trip) but my jaw half dropped when the super handed me a blue Sig Sauer case with a small address sticker and some tape on a handle a few years back. f:P:

Most dealers get their shipments picked up directly. If they are not transporting the gun, they get around the requirements. Interestingly the handguns I bought from Cabela's were fully double locked.

They charge you for those locks as well

Fair enough. Guarantee is no doubt to strong a word.

They sure do. And lockable cases for those handguns that came in factory cardboard.

For all of you proposing trigger locks let me ask you this: how many of the new guns that you received in the mail has trigger locks on them. How many came in locked cases?

Not one of the several restricted firearms that I have received from dealers has come with either, not one. Pistols and ARs in a box, that's it.

i asked a store that i was at last year about that and they said that retailers have a different set of laws when shipping a restricted firearm.

I'll just add that I send my packages via Expedited….further increasing the "awareness" of the item.

only people with a venture one account with canada post can ship expedited as far as i know.
everyone else would ship regular parcel or xpresspost.

This. Don't over complicate the task, or be in a big fearful rush to obey laws that don't even exist.

That's how it is done.
Just make sure you'll get a STATT before you bring the firearm to the post office.

I use a generic box (amazon box usually) full of paper balls or some type of filler to make sure nothing moves around inside. I completely cover the box in clear packing tape... like 'waterproof' covered in tape. I write the address in big letters on a piece of paper and then completely cover that in clear tape as well. I always ship 'signature required'. Insurance is up to the buyer.

And why is that so?

I send everything insured, because it is my responsibility to make sure the buyer gets what he paid for, and if he doesn't get it, he gets his money back. I expect the same from ANY seller.

I guess because no one has asked me to ship it insured yet. I haven't had to go through a claim yet, so I suppose I don't know how much of a pain it could be dealing with an uninsured package.
I wouldn't deny someone if they wanted it, but it would be included in the shipping cost I quote them.

I always include the insurance to protect myself, the positive aspect for the buyer is only a plus to seal the deal.

They do exist and I even gave references in my post. Do what you want, but I don't think its responsible to provide advise that is has the potential to have legal consequences for those that would follow it.

The chance of running into problems is remote, but why pick and choose what laws to obey? Why get a STATT to the post office if your just going to break the next law involved anyway?

I just ordered from a well known dealer. It is shipping Canada Post, Expedited Parcels. When it arrives I'll reply as to type of packaging and whether trigger locked or not.

I just received another cz shadow in the mail yesterday and it wasn't trigger locked and the case wasn't locked and as far as I know no puppies or kittens were killed in the process.
