Marlin 795 opinion please

If I got a better trigger the rifle would be everything I want,I put a thumbhole Boyd's stock on it but beyond that,I'm not into modifications.i still have the original plastic stock and I filled that with non expanding foam and that fixed the 'hollow' sound and it seemed to stiffen it up some.Easy fix to one of the complaints

Love my Marlin 795 Have a 9X iluminated scope on it and it loves all Ammo I ever put through it. Want to get a few 25 round mags for it...... One day.

Personally I found after opening up the barrel channel in the stock so it's free floating the hollow resonance mostly went away. How do you find the Boyds thumb hole stock for length of pull and balance compared to the original plastic?

Destructor is that a vinyl wrap or hydro dipped? I'm curious because I see a repeating pattern in the art.

the 10/22 has a couple advantages, way more aftermarket support, better magazine, better scope mounting options. Other than that the Marlin 795 is a great gun and half the cost of a 10/22. If I didnt already have a 10/22 I might buy the Marlin, still might one day but a cz452 will be my next rimfire purchase.

You forgot one thing. Needs hundreds of dollars in mods to be as accurate as a marlin out of the box

Yes. And the 1022 mags are a ##### to release. They don't just drop out like on the 795s. Also don't have last round bolt hold open like the 795s do. Not as light as a 795 either. I've got both but much prefer the 795.

Yes but the rugers mag fits flush with the stock, and is much nicer to load.

I like the Boyd's thumbhole stock,it fits very nicely and certainly looks good on it.Weighs more, which is an advantage for shooting off a bench but a disadvantage for a carry gun.I'm definately going to try to get one if those Mcarbo spring replacement kits though, that's the only negative to this rifle.Hopefuly it's not to dificult to install...I think I will also try to use the J B weld idea to reduce the trigger creep.I still can't get my head around why Marlin continues to manufacture such an awful trigger when the aftermarket fix is available...it makes absolutely no sense....I don't accept the 'legal issue' excuse because if it was then you would see Mcarbo being sued...as well as all the rest of the companies putting decent triggers on their rifles.I have about 25 .22's ,mostly older ones ,50-60 years old ,some over 100 years old ,nothing high class, and in my opinion Marlin 795 is the hands down winner for the worst trigger you can buy off the shelf...but as long as the consumer continues to buy it,they won't bother fixing it.Darn shame too because it's a fine rifle, cheap, accurate and no issues

You can check some videos about the marlin action, personally I sold mine as I hated the trigger and stock.

Of course in that price range its one of the best choise, if you like to have a custom rifle then go 1022 from scratch or dar22.

Jmho

The trigger on my Papoose and 795 are a little heavy but not that bad. Most new low end .22s coming out now don't have great triggers. Even my CZ 455 had a lousy trigger and that was a $600. gun. The best out of the box is the Savage AccuTrigger for an inexpensive .22. IMHO.

I will be the first to disagree with you there. All the cz's I have bought (5) have had pretty good triggers. Not down in the 1 pound or less but good. I also despise the accutrigger.

My 30 year old Marlin has a way better trigger than my new 795,so its not that they can't manufacture one.I'm not looking for a target grade trigger, just something in the 4lb range and without too much creep, much like any older Mossberg had
But I suggest trying the NON expanding * foam on the plastic stocks,it's a cheap fix and works well. You just take off the butt plate and insert the nozzle and fill it up

* DO NOT,repeat ,DO NOT use expanding foam...

I personally don't mind the mag is not flush I actually like it much simpler to grab on with gloves.
Regarding the loading I found its very similar, no advantages for either one imo. The savage 63 has a crapy mag.

I figure the Marlin 795 is about the best value for your money on the market in terms of price, reliability and accuracy....I really don't care about not being able to modify it,if that's important then buy a Ruger 10/22 ...it's just that terrible trigger that there is no excuse for and while the replacement spring kit us available, WHY don't they just fix it at the factory?the cost would be zero and the improvement priceless..

The dip trigger has adjustable take up and over travel. Does wonders for trigger feel.
