Marlin 795 opinion please

Got one, restocked it with a Boyd's thumb hole.Best value in a 22 as you can get.My only complaint is I think they held a contest to see who could come up with the worst trigger and awarded the contract to the winner. My 30 year old marlin 22magnum has an infinitely better trigger. It wasn't broke-why did the fix it?

I considered getting a 795 many years ago. Ended up buying a 981T BNIB for cheap. It has the feel of a full-sized rifle and the Micro-grooved bbl is very accurate. Don't know how many rounds it's seen but it has never failed. Also, the bolt/tube combo allows me to feed it different kinds of ammo without issues
A few nicer and more expensive 22lr's have come and gone over the years but the Marlin is a keeper. Good Shooters for not a lot of $$….

Well thank you everyone. This is what I was hoping to hear about this .22. The main reason for this is to replace my old bolt action. I took my 8 year old son out to shoot some rotten potatoes last summer. He was able to use a friends semi and found it much more user friendly than the old bolt, plus he really liked the scope. Well I will be looking for someone to have free shipping and a decent scope on sale after the new year.

Like a few others have mentioned, my single issue with the 795 is the scope mounts walking down the rail. I went with a one piece mount that hasn't moved yet. Great little rifle for the price.

Enjoy,
GMC

Nutandfancy has a pretty good review. If you are not convinced after you watch the video, then the rifle is not for you. If it was my money, I would buy another. The real question is, why is the Papoose twice as much as the 795!?!

Consider getting your son a Marlin 60 with a Simmons fixed 4x 22mag scope….combo won't break the bank and no mags to mess with.

Because it's far more challenging to manufacture a detachable barrel that retains zero after being removed and re-attached.

Have the Papoose as well, and it's also a great bargain for what you get. It's actually more consistently accurate, with a wider range of ammo, than my mid 70's production Browning SA-22 takedown. The browning is a lot purdier though.

Of all the 22's I've owned and shot, the 795 stands head and shoulders above the crowd for having the worst trigger. My question is -why? The excuse about liability doesn't wash, other companies face the same issues and have better out if the box triggers. There are aftermarket spring replacement kits that improve the trigger, so why doesn't Marlin install THEM at the factory?

Apart from that single issue, the 795 is a great little gun that is accurate, reliable and the best bang for your buck in a SA.

I had a marlin 60 and like a fool sold it. Shot amazingly. Last week had the chance at a stainless/ grey laminate one so I picked it up for the huge price tag of 175 dollars. Could not be happier.
I have had a 10/22 and can never seemyself with another one. The marlin is 10 times the gun

I have been thinking of buying one of these as well. I noticed on the Bass Pro website that they have them listed at $159.

Edit;
Sorry that's in the states. The website took me to the American prices.

One very simple mod that you can do that greatly improves the 'feel' of the 795 is to fill the stock with non expanding *foam...takes away that 'hollow' feeling when you tap it

* very important,do NOT use expanding foam,it will distort the stock

I found that with my mount the screws were turning out, after some Loctite all is good.

Just picked up the stainless version on boxing day, will be testing it out next weekend. Would anyone suggest a red dot or similar system for plinking. Not going to use a scope just yet, i dont have anywhere to shoot that is over 50 yards.

I've put a red dot on my 795 and removed it after a while, Maybe it's me who's not good enough but I realized it was not efficient to shoot rabbit that were at 75-100 yds. For plinking on steel target at 25-50 it's ok but a scope opens a whole lot of possibilities.

I bought mine last year, after watching the review of nutnfancy. Price wise you can't beat it. Personally I kept the stock design it's light and fast, I have a nikon P-rimfire 2-7x32 bdc 150 approximately 200$ so very decent scope for this 22.

I bought in the past the UTG adapter but it brings the scope too high for my taste.

I've had a lot of trouble with the rings sliding on the dovetail lot of messing around, my advice would be either go with good rings from the start or go to a gun smith and drill and tap the receiver with pic rail just like big bore rifles. Now it is not moving, it's lighter than the use of the UTG adapter the scope is low and I love it.

I mainly plinked with it but I brought it a hunt willow ptarmigan up north and realized doing head shots on those partridge is not easy even with a good rest. I then went to try other ammo, shot it very carefully and to be honest that trigger sucks if you want to do precision shooting. Plinking it fine but that over travel kind of double stage trigger then pressing 6.75-7lbs is too much at least for me if I want to head shot partridge from a fair distance (25-45 yards) standing up.
I've ordered the mcarbo spring kit that will reduce the trigger pull to 3.5-4lbs, still safe to use for hunting and will give a whole lot for 40$.
I also ordered the DIProducts reviewed by nutnfance, this is not changing the trigger pull but will makes it more prime and remove the over travel with the adjusting screws. the trigger guard also seems to be bigger which would be a great thing for shooting with gloves during winter.

I highly recommend this rifle, I've had other 22s and sold them all since I was using only this one.

Get the UTG Medium Profile on Amazon $15. which is the same height as the scope in that last pic. Also picked up the Stainless model which fortunately is as accurate as my Blue 795, which is now for sale. Also have the Papoose. Another cool little rifle.

To solve the infamous "scope slide" issue, just use a bit of dollar-store clear-coat nail polish to the tip off rail and attach the rings before it has a chance to dry. You'll have a good ten or fifteen minutes to get them in place before it dries and hardens.

The advantage of using crappy dollar store clear coat is its thicker and gooier than the nice stuff your wife is likely to have in her bag of magic tricks, and takes longer to set and harden, which gives you more time to get things in place.
