Stripping krylon paint off an Ar-15

100% Jamie. I think painted guns are great. To each there own. If you dont like them then thats ok to. Lets just enjoy them the way we like.

I paint all my guns. Now call me a idiot or anything you wish to my face . Don't want a painted gun ? Simple don't paint or don't buy one pretty simple

I agree. Never underestimate the power of ignorance, it still amazes me how some people don't think!

I'll keep that picture in mind next time I Air Drop into my local gun club with my rustoleum painted Norinco 1911 (may have to paint the locked case the 1911 is in also will have to check Firearms Act on Air Dropping into my local gun club with a restricted) lol
Give me a break......

You missed the point where you stated that even in the armed forces, that it is pointless and ### to paint weapons.

The flash point of gas is to low and many people have died from burning there whole block down by doing this.
I'm not saying that it's a bad cleaner, it works great. It's dangerous as ####.
But go ahead Darwin will take care of it..

Perfect safe, been cleaning things this way forever. Now if your dumb enough to do it inside or fire up a smoke at the same time then really it's your own fault and one less stupid person for the rest of us to deal with.

Exactly. At no point did I say anything about whether one should or should not paint their personally-owned guns. My point is that highly-regarded military units (that can be assumed to know what they are doing) have been painting guns for decades, regardless of what somebody on the Internet thinks of the practice.

The paint job gives it character. I will confess that I don't have the courage to spray bomb my own expensive AR. To each his own.

It blows my mind the sh!t attitudes some guys have within our community. Reminds me the other day where a half dozen old timers were plunking away with their hand loads and bolt actions at my range. I pop in to site in a couple black rifles with my Multicam pants on and got a ton of dirty looks and snickers, end up overhearing them yelling at each other (on account of their hearing pro) about "the kid over there" and how "that generation" "missed the boat". First, 40 is just around the corner for me. Second, who the eff cares if I wear Multicam pants and shoot black rifles? Blows my mind.

Point is, if you don't have anything nice to say, stfu. Who cares if guys paint their 2k rifles? Help the OP with his problem but don't cut down guys who enjoy their hobby in a certain way you don't agree with. For the record, the only painted rifle I have is a 10/22 with a Maurauder stock. Bought it like that and fkn love it. Would never do it to my Own rifles though, on account of a serious lack of painting skill.

I know exactly how you feel... Just turned 41 and got a 6.5 CM RPR for myself this past Christmas as I decided to challenge myself with some longer range shooting. Went to the range in January to sight it in and showed up as a bunch of powder guys were shooting their rifles and got an ear full about how I'm not portraying the right image for our shooting community. Really!!? How is that? I enjoy all types of shooting activities and have been doing so for 20+ years. The attitude and condescending views of many people in this community are ridiculous. It's fine to have an opinion but don't try and shove it down people's throats!

I had people telling me if I was a serious shooter that I should have bought an 308 Remington with a custom barrel... who are they to tell me how to spend my money? I was so disgusted that I left early and went home upset. Opinions are exactly that... one persons personal point of view. Who cares if other people spend money on something you find silly. I put together a tactical 22LR to have fun with buddies doing run and gun drills... I've also got a bunch of negative feedback on that. Who cares... If I want to airbrush a Kryptek finish on it or one of my ARs for that matter? It's my hard earned stuff.

Ok... I'm getting off the soap box!

I go to the range and shoot a lot of long range .22 because it's cheap and fun. That doesn't mean I expect the guy next to me to put away his .50 because it's different than what I shoot.

You do a lot of "front line deployments" with your restricted AR? lol
Camo'ing up your rifle is as ### in the armed forces as it is in civilian life.

Wow, that's a pretty intolerant comment and I don't think I've ever heard of anyone in the CF ever say that, or is that merely your opinion?

We cam our faces and wear cadpat, I don't see why wanting to paint your rifle to match your environment would make you want to want to fornicate with someone of the same gender. The QM would definitely have a $hitfit and the RSM would probably tear you new one (aside from possibly being charged), but what you said is a bit of a stretch.

I've seen pictures of that rifle everywhere, you knew the owner? Must have some interesting stories.

We all know travis touches tips, and this is his way of expressing himself.

Theres nothing wrong with painting a gun, its yours, do what you want with it

I'm sure some of these guys would not agree with his opinion, lol!

Considering that he gets his fieldcraft advice from weapon techs that pretty much sums it up for me. Straight from the RSM/CSM parade ground mentality; backwards and stone-age.

Camo'ing up your rifle is as ### in the armed forces as it is in civilian life. Like someone already said in this thread alone, "if they're close enough to see your paint job, you missed"
I'm trying real hard to think of any sort of situation where mission critical was failed due to "enemy-spotting-rifle-without-####ty-paint-job".

If you like a BBQ paint finish on your $2K personal rifle by all means spray away Sir, I think it's idiotic personally but that's just me. You may also one day think so if you ever decide to try and sell it and get your money back.

Anyways! OP let us know how it turns out. You're facing an uphill battle Sir.

Alot of gun hands I know in this here Canadian Army would disagree with you.

Take it to the carwash, throw it on the ground and stand on it. Pressure wash it off, then pick it up, tilt muzzle down and pull charging handle to rear. Let the rifle drain then chamber a round and fire a few out into the parking lot to help dry the rifle. You guys are over thinking this. Are there any Snickers left?
