Hi all,
I'm part of a group of entrepreneurs with the University of Alberta that are looking to make and sell firearms that are replicated from video games. We're looking to get an idea of what the market size is. If we build the handgun pictured below and were able to sell it for approximately $800.00 would anyone buy it?

Key points:
- It will be built well to feel solid, with an extremely large frame
- Very little plastic will be used, the gun is meant to feel heavy
- Size would be similar to a desert eagle
- Caliber will be 45ACP

P.S.
Anyone know the legal process around becoming a manufacturer of firearms in Alberta?

Interesting idea for sure. There could be a market for the people that play the games to transfer the weapons from the screen to the range. I would love to have Hellboy's pistol for some afternoon plinking.
The one thing I would be concerned about is the lifespan of video games and the time it would take to get the design off of the game and into a decent functioning firearm. The demand might not be there as the next big thing has already come along. That doesn't even consider licensing issues.
Like I said, it is a very cool idea but I am not sure if it could be worthwhile from a business point of view. Either way, good luck.

Wouldn't you be better off with a business model that built overlay chassis for popular firearms already in production?

Think Roni and what they did with Glock carbine chassis'.

You could do something similar in a handgun dress up kit and not be caught in the BS red tape that is manufacturing guns in Canada.

Now if you could make a functional Aliens Pulse Rifle, there would be a market for that. :D

Just so we are clear, if these are fully funtional firearms, how would maintenance work and how would the hollywood magic stand up to recoil?

edit: sorry are you machining new to look like this, or machining addons to convert inexpensive pistols to look like this?

>.< just don't sell em to anyone around me. Enough v-idiots at the range as it is. Can't wait to have em practicing their halo game moves in the stall next to me....."watch this, just like my playstation!....BANGBAN
GBANGBANG-SMASH....oh #### the lights!!"

Cool idea, but I'm not sure how many gamers are actually into the shooting sports. I think the above mentioned airsoft idea may be the key.

I don't know the hoops you need to jump through to start making firearms, but in Canada, I can't see that being easy or cheap. $800 for a limited production gun might be optimistic unless it is based heavily on a Hi-Point with only cosmetic add-ons. What platform are you thinking of basing it on? The Airsoft idea is a good one as you'll hit a way bigger market and it would be cheaper. Still I applaud your initiative. Some iconic guns would never have been made without a few passionate gunnutz taking some risks and building their dream guns.

I always wondered that too and I'm finding out from some gun shop owners that there are a lot. Gamers are becoming bigger and bigger market, particularly for restricteds, as they all want to buy the handguns and black rifles from their favourite shooter games.
