300 winchester mag

As best as I can recall, :)this one helped me out on three Moose.

All three were one shot 'bang flops'.But I gave it to a buddy for his birthday when I acquired my 308 NM.

But, ;)a deal has been made and another 300 WM is on the way.

That's an eyecatcher for sure Johnn !
When WSS had them on for $ 399 I couldn't resist and took home a .243.
The 300 Win. Mag. versions were long gone for that price..

300WinMag recoil depends alot on stock design. I have two. One, my main hunting rifle is an old Remington Custom Shop Alaskan Wilderness Hunter.I can shoot it all day from the bench, no problem. The other a SakoFinnlight, "smarts" from the bench if you don't hold on real tight.Remington has firm factory recoil pad and a really nice factory synthetic stock. Sako has a Limbsaver pad and still stings a bit off the bench. In the field, no difference. My favorite hunting calibre. Elk,moose, bear, sheep, caribou, goat and deer all died real good when hit with 180gr bullets out of above rifles. Messed up one coyote real good also;)

I have been shooting a Browning Abolt synthetic stalker SS. 300 WM for close to 20 yrs. Shooting off a bench will beat you up a bit but like many have ssid already, get a good recoil pad if it hurts and a quality scope with good eye relief. They are hard on shoulders and glass but the best all round caliber in my opinion.

Your level of shooting experience will determine to a certain extent your tolerance for recoil as well. I only started shooting a lot five years ago and at that time I couldn't handle a 300. I shot 25rds out of my H&H today (steel butt plate on a a Pre 64 M70), 20 30-06 with a plastic plate, and 20 303 with a steel plate. Tender at the end of the day but I was still able to call my shots so no flinch. If your tolerance isn't there yet, just wait a bit. Don't put a brake on. One shot without hearing protection in the field will cause permanent hearing loss.

Agree heartily, NO MUZZLE BRAKES on Hunting rifles. Good set up for the recoil shy, Winchester had a BOSS system with both a BRAKE version and a non-braked Boss you could put on for hunting. I have a 338WinMag with this. I used to use the braked version to clear the rifle range so I could have some nice undistracted shooting time!

When I should possibly be at least considering downsizing a bit, I still seem to ;)find reason to pick the odd additional 'treasure'. Another for the 'I want' category. Oh well...........
The 243 I assume is the one you did the good looking colour change job on?? If so, it looks like it turned out well. How does it shoot??

Thanks Johnn, the little 243 hovered around, the magic inch and then one day it made a 0.19" group with 60 gr. Loads followed by an average of 0.30 " for heavier loads up to 100 gr., so it will do..

I'll say!! Nothing shabby about those results. Indications are the 300 WM I have on the way has shown similar accuracy results. Hard to beat at those prices:d:d.

I don't own one but I did fire several and never found it to be too much. Depending on the load it seems to be a tad stouter than a 7mm RM but not as bad as the Weatherby 300 Mag. All that is of course subjective and everyone seems to feel recoil a bit differently. Heck, I have shot 308's that seem to "kick" more. Just the way the rifle did it's thing I suspect. Or I was a bit wimpy that day!

I have a 783 still in the box from milarms sale! Here is a question, for anyone who has shot a Mosin 91/30, without a limb saver or anything, which has more felt recoil! I also have a 7mm RM in the 783 and find that not too bad! Either way after the good advise given here I will be picking up a limb saver for the 300 win mag!

I only find the 91/30 objectionable from the bench. I used to shoot upwards of 100 rounds in a session from mine. I would never do that with my 6.6lb .338 wm.

I have lighter rifles in bigger calibers than the 783 in 7mm rem mag but I would say the rifle will kick more than the mosin. A steel buttplate might exacerbate the recoil of a mild round; but the rifle is heavy. The mosin's reputation as a big kicker comes from a bunch of guys who have never shot a rife in a larger caliber imo.

Reminds me though; I need another mosin...

I've got a Mosin and so does my son. As near as I can tell my friggen garden hose has more recoil. All those heavy mild military rifles are the same. .303, 8x57,.308, 7x57; all could be handed to any scared 17 year old they grabbed off the street and tell him to shoot every other scared kid wearing a different hard hat than himself. A 7 Rem isn't much different. A .300 Win comes in at awful close to double. It won't kill you either, but it is in a different league..
