Ron Smith is not taking any new work until the New Year. I have a JC Higgins M50 (FN M98) that wants to become a 35Whelen.
Better keep the barrel if it is in good shape. Chrome Lined goodness by High Standard.

Had not considered that.
Please do!
I know that the JC Higgins is an FN made 98 commercial action, one that is quite desirable for custom work, but did not consider that the barrel was chrome lined which may be a problem for a rebore. My current Moose tickler is a JC Higgins Model 50 in .30-06. Very accurate. Do some googling and you will find that the action as well as the barrels are of very high quality.
Here they're are. I'm not the greatest photographer and they're cell phone pics but hopefully they'll do. Cheers!

I'd imagine that is hard on the reboring rig too.
Hi All,
I have a 30-06 Mauser with a ~20 inch heavy barrel. I really like the rifle, the one caveat is that it's heavy for the caliber. Since I just got another lighter 30-06 I'm tempted to rebore it to a big thumper. From my research the 9.32x62 looks promising. Is this something possible with the barrel length that I have?
Also, who can do this type of work in Canada? I found Ron Smith using the search function. Is there anyone in BC that will do a good job with a descent turnaround time?
*Rebarelling isn't an option since I have a brand new barrel with some very nice necg sights.
Thanks,
Mik
Harold; Ron will make it whatever one wants. [I had a long dialogue with him about the groove diameter and twist rate before deciding]
This one is .3763" It will probably shoot the .375 jacketed bullets fine
My Winchester certainly does, and it is .0005" larger.
But I have a supply of .377" bullets laid in, so can shoot them for a while yet.
Regards, Dave.
Talked with Ron, he has the .366 reamer.
That was the quote he gave me last week.I was told it was $350 for a rebore.

When I talked to him today he said he didn't, he said he could rebore to 9.3 but not chamber (reamer).
He did say that he charged half the price of the tool if he had to buy it, and after that he could compare to the 30-06.
He also said he has about 4 or 5 months of work in the books ahead of him, vs. a year ahead as quoted above.
