Reboring 30-06 to 9.3x62

Please do!

Here they're are. I'm not the greatest photographer and they're cell phone pics but hopefully they'll do. Cheers!

My current Moose tickler is a JC Higgins Model 50 in .30-06. Very accurate. Do some googling and you will find that the action as well as the barrels are of very high quality.
I know that the JC Higgins is an FN made 98 commercial action, one that is quite desirable for custom work, but did not consider that the barrel was chrome lined which may be a problem for a rebore.

OP,

Not sure where you're at but this is from another forum out west.

Karl Schmidt at KS Arms in Edmonton is back in the gunsmithing business now. He is making some great looking actions, boring barrels, etc. Also some great looking chassis. I saw him shooting some of his rigs and looked like they were holding 1/2 MOA with some fairly light barrels. I have had Karl do several chamber jobs and he is among the best.

Good luck.

Hi All,

I have a 30-06 Mauser with a ~20 inch heavy barrel. I really like the rifle, the one caveat is that it's heavy for the caliber. Since I just got another lighter 30-06 I'm tempted to rebore it to a big thumper. From my research the 9.32x62 looks promising. Is this something possible with the barrel length that I have?

Also, who can do this type of work in Canada? I found Ron Smith using the search function. Is there anyone in BC that will do a good job with a descent turnaround time?

*Rebarelling isn't an option since I have a brand new barrel with some very nice necg sights.

Thanks,

Mik

Ron Smith does great work, and probably not $500.00 either, though it might vary a bit, depending.

I just received a Marlin M1893 [built 1906, Octagonal HB, originally 30-30] back from Ron. [30-30 bore was toast.]
He made it into a 38-55 for me. A very nice job, and keeps the firearm as close to original as possible.
I am quite happy with Ron's work....turnaround was 5 months.

I am developing loads for it right now, but a couple have already shown a lot of promise.
1. 255 grain Barnes original [.377 diameter] 31 grains of H322, Fed 210 in a Winchester case. - 1.25", 3-shot group @ 100M.
2. 255 grain CIL [old stock, .377 diameter] 30 grains of Norma 200, Fed 210 in a Starline case. - just under ½ inch @ 50M.

I have another 100M group, where two shot are just touching, and the 3rd is about 1Âľ" out. still very hunt able, IMHO.
A number of 50M groups were under 1", and that with 3 different design .377, 255 grain bullets, using 4 different powders. [RL7, H322, N200, VV N130]

Once I have a couple hundred jacketed loads through it, I will try some Cast I have here, that work well in my reproduction M94, 38-55.

Ron is a bit absentminded at times, but he knows how to re-bore a rifle, and make a barrel. Regards, Dave.

Harold; Ron will make it whatever one wants. [I had a long dialogue with him about the groove diameter and twist rate before deciding]

This one is .3763" It will probably shoot the .375 jacketed bullets fine
My Winchester certainly does, and it is .0005" larger.

But I have a supply of .377" bullets laid in, so can shoot them for a while yet.

Regards, Dave.

Me too I have my grandpa's Win 1894 and have squirreled away a few boxes of the old CIL .377 255gr bullets for reloading...working with RE#7 for now...Harold

I was told it was $350 for a rebore.

Talked with Ron, he has the .366 reamer.

When I talked to him today he said he didn't, he said he could rebore to 9.3 but not chamber (reamer).

He did say that he charged half the price of the tool if he had to buy it, and after that he could compare to the 30-06.

He also said he has about 4 or 5 months of work in the books ahead of him, vs. a year ahead as quoted above.

Damn. That sucks. I guess we had a bit of miscommunication.

Thank you for sharing the info on this thread and the other one. I was just about to ship my rifle to him tomorrow. I was just waiting for some ammo I ordered to arrive so that I could send along a few cartridges as Ron requested. I'll see if I can find someone else that can do it. I already bought a bunch of ammo and reloading supplies for the 9.3x62 I found on sale. I don't want to have to get rid of it.
