Ontario spring turkey 2016

I can only get to turkey hunting this year after 9:00 in the morning; hoping there will be a few horny stragglers amongst the toms who will respond to my calling.

You may want to consider run and gunning them if your regular setup didn't work out.......

Happy birthday Arclight!..... Hey, you now have a great story of a missed bird, a trophy bird and a smashed windshield all in one day!

30 minutes into opening day and my tag was filled. I called him in from a 100 yards away and took the shot at 35 yards. He's a pretty decent tom at 21 1/2 lbs. with a 9 1/4" beard and 1 1/4" spurs. Now I have to help my brother bag his bird.

Shot my tom at 830am after watching a few birds across the field for the entire morning. This guy came running in.

Scouting this evening we located nice toms on five of our properties... should be good the next couple days.

Spent 10 hours in the blind today with my 13 y.o. daughter (her first year hunting). No Tom but memories that I wouldn't trade for all the beards in the world! :d

I will be out for the opener like always but one thing i have learned over the years that I will pass on to a new or not so new turkey hunter. Yes it is great to be tagged out early but if you are after a true monster and they are not cooperating at first as the season progresses and the hens start to nest the big boys get more cooperative if they have not been over educated early on. I have shot the biggest birds in the last week or ten days of the season.
Last year it took me all season to get close enough to a literally huge bird. If he saw a decoy or heard a call he would head the other direction at a high rate of speed. On the same farm I shot a big boy 6-7 years ago with 1 7/8" spurs. Second last day of the season I got close enough just too close when he stepped out on the end of the gun barrel instead of 15 yds down where I expected him. Lets just say a swing and a miss and he is still around this year even bigger.
Point is if you fill tags early you may miss out on the true big ones. My personal best weight wise of 27 lbs(Certified scale and witnesses) was also taken the last few days of the season and many other 24-25lbers
Always remember though a turkey in hand is worth two in the bush. Good luck all!!!!

How do you classify a bird as a monster??

made it out this morning after less than 2hrs sleep with all the coughing I've been doing during the night. alarm went off at 5am and I wasn't going to go out but my wife rolled over and told me to get the hell out of bed so she could get some sleep before she goes to work........ so off I went. walked 350yards to my blind (I love hunting at home) and sat until 7am with not a gobble to be heard so my mom was putting the kids on the bus for me and I figured I'm sitting in a blind in the cold with the heat on my Milwaukee jacket, reclined in an old leather office chair, might as well have a nap........ as soon as my eyes closed I heard a gobble next door so I sit the chair back up and let out a few calls and there's three tom's answering. kept calling for 5-10mins and a hen came into the field with a tom following her and as soon as he saw my two hen decoys and my primos killer-b he came running in from 100yds and attacked the killer-b well that was it for him, I wasn't having any of that so it was over at 7:15.
9 1/2" beard and 1 1/18" spurs
pics to follow once my wife uploads the crappy cell phone pic she took before running to work.
