Picture of the day

Sure as hell possible, XRC. Impossible to know now, just as you say. Was it fairly common practise?

From my Regiment, Canadian Grenadier Guards. Not sure what tracks these are, likely Sherman.
SOUVANIER

Panther tracks look like this.

An interesting study of deception in trying to make the Firefly Sherman look like a regular 76mm gunned tank. Lots of wartime pics of Shermans show them festooned with...........Sherman track sections................there must have been a goodly supply to harvest and use from burned out hulks. That said any and all manner of track will work. The above Firefly looks to have Churchhill track mounted.

^ Even the track was pulled off and "repurposed" from Wittmans Tiger 007.

007 I wonder if that is why..............hmmmmmmmm?

The fruit machine was an early analogue computer associated with the British Chain Home defence radar network. This network was one of the first successful radar distant early warning systems. The Fruit machine was used to simplify calculations for altitude, speed, heading etc. of radar contacts so they could be plotted on maps. This duty was previously done by a large crew with probably several more crews off duty for 24/7 coverage.

When I first saw this picture, I wasn’t sure just what the hell was happening. But then I saw it was the USS Thetis Bay, with a few PBY Catalinas

I think they are F6F Hellcat's

RF

Looks a lot more like F4Fs to me. Look at the angled main gear on the Wildcat beside the port wing of the 4th PBY from the bow, and the one at the stern. Also the Thetis Bay was a Casablanca class CVE and they typically deployed F4Fs and not the F6F.
