Talk me out of a Benelli M4

I had a M4, sold it because it got slow at work and I have bills to pay. As soon as I can save up $2000-$2500 I am getting another one. Most fun you can have with your pants on. Mine was a 18" barrel (with chokes) and it was very accurate with slugs too. Here is one downside...I made some ground targets up with old milk jugs at the range, and brought a whole case of shells. Well the case was gone in 30 minutes, that gets pricey :)

Nice endorsement

I`ll be going 18" too so it can be non restricted

The Benelli M4 is not cheap but as in all cases you get what you pay for, I have over 1500 rounds through mine never cleaned it and still functions awesome, try that with a cheap auto loader

Yeah, that build quality is part of the attraction for sure

the m4 is the most reliable semi-auto shotgun of its style. the gas system can have one of the two self regulating pistons jam, and still work. (internet pic below)

a friend of mine bought a M2 and it worked perfect, accurate fast follow up shots too, but he always regretted not spending the extra money and getting the M4.

like other people have said.. buy once, cry once.

Yeah, it`s expensive but it sounds like its worth it

I find it hard to justify that kind of money on a shotgun. As far as "black" firearms go, I think one of the principal virtues of the shotgun is that you can buy a perfectly serviceable pump gun for much less than an AR.

That said, the custom Versamax route from TacOrd does look attractive if you want a high end shotgun. The Beretta 1301 also has potential, especially since someone has come up with a widget to fix the bolt release flaw:

I already have a pump - if I didn't I`d have one of these (well maybe I wouldn't cos its restricted - tough call):

I dumped 60 rounds of 00 Buck through a M4 and it never missed a beat. I'm talked shooting and reloading as fast as I could. All the gun oil was smoking off the barrel.

It have one it's ok it a tad bit heavy. I'd like to get into three gun but I honestly barley use it. I don't know what I'd replace it with tacord versa max hey ? It would be nice if there was something that looked and functioned like an m4 that was more usable hunting game bird. I don't think I'll sell it until I find something else that's more versatile. Does what it's advertised to do and it's fun as hell to shoot slugs the ghost ring sights are rather nice for that. Mine has a hendsolt red dot

Interesting

The M4s Ive seen are all marked for 3" shells - or are there two versions (the other being the 3.5" variant)?

All M4s are 3".

So is it Picatinny Or Weaver?

Sounds a lot like my Uzkon.....

It's supposed to be Picatinny but is dimensionally different enough to occasionally cause issues.

Anyway, if you want a folding stock on a semiauto shotgun, there aren't a lot of options. It was only recently with designs like the Benelli Vinci, Remington V3, Beretta 1301 and Hatsan MPA that don't have the recoil spring assembly in the stock, where it's a possibility, and the first three have nothing available as of yet.

I believe they only come in 3". The 3.5 came up because someone mentioned an M2 was a good alternative, but then I pointed out that a SBE II is eseeantially the same gun but because it fires 3.5 it has a greater capacity. It's also easier to clean, so take that for what it's worth.

I was in the same dilemma. I wanted a do everything shotgun. My main motivation was something to shoot clay and eventually to do 3 gun. I had quite a few Guns on the list but I wanted one that would cycle everything. From reading reviews I figured the m2 would do a better job than the m4. So now it was down to the versa max and the m2. I personally liked the way the m2 felt so I went with a 21" m2 field. I'm sure whatever you get you will enjoy it. I've only been out Shooting clays with it but love it so far.

Beretta 1301 is very popular with the IPSC and 3 gun crowd it can handle pretty much everything you can put through it and a nice thing is that it wont break your pocket book and really needs no modification like the Versa Max does

Nice setup

So have you swapped out the original magazine tube (looks different)?

From what I can tell it's a popular mod - is it purely for aesthetics or does it add capacity?

Thanks! And it's the Tac Star +1 extension. I have one of the +1's that CTC Supplies sells, and the factory spring is a little loose for my liking, so since the Tac Star is machined through enough that the spring will go through it (but closed enough that the follower won't pass the halfway point) and I used an 18" spring with a bit more compression to it. It also prevents you from over-compressing the spring (which isn't much of an issue with a shotgun, but I'm kinda weird that way...)

590A1 Heat shield?

It's actually a standard 590 heat shield, it fits fine on the barrel (you need to trim 1/4" off the tabs at the back so it doesn't hit the pistons) but you need to trim the handguards in height for it to work. I've read the thread on the 590a1 heat shield and was curious if it sits higher and needs less trimming... This way though, it's a solid fit between the heat shield and the hand guards, so it can't rotate around at all!

I bought one from a CGNer last week. In my opinion, until you commit to an M4 you're always going to gravitate towards it, and buying a lesser shotgun will not remedy it.
