Modern Varmint Rifle Updated Oct 14 2015

I think you will find it vary front heavy and almost imposable to shoot off hand that is why I went for the thin hunting barrel
if shooting at paper then it wont make any difference

My hunting rifle is a rem 700 sps with a 26" heavy barrel with optics, bedding and bottom metal it's around 10lbs and I love it and used to shooting off hand with it so a mv with a 18.6 heavy barrel weighing in at 8-9 lbs will be a treat

I was told a while ago it was around the 9lbs range.

This is not true.

The lightest configuration for a modern Varmint is around 6.5lbs, using a basic collapsible, and the fortis switch 12" handguard.

Please keep in mind this is not an exact number but merely an estimation: going with a basic collapsible and light contour barrel, the dpms free float handguard is roughly 1/3 of a pound heavier. (I only had the Modern Hunter versions to put on the scale. I expect a basic varmint to be around the 7lb mark. The A2 stock will add a bit of weight over and above but not unreasonably so. Hopefully soon we can put a variety of rifles on the scale, we'll keep you all posted.

That more like it I can live with 7lb

Has anyone had experience with the vortex strike eagle. I was thinking of getting one for my mv. Any opinions welcome.

Since you added that last bit I would suggest it would be best not derail this thread when the are more appropriate places to ask such a question. That said I am a firm believer that anyone who puts a cheap optic on a expensive firearm is a fool. I always match my optic budget to my rifle budget, then I pick the best quality type of sight available in my criteria and budget.

With NR black rifles this usually means an Elcan Specter DR 1/4x or a quality red dot for me.

Nothing wrong with a cheep scope for hunting as long as a person is not planning on shooting long range
I'm going to run TRIICON reflex 1x25 sight on mine for now but that's just because I have one sitting in a box

There's a thread on the ATRS forum , regarding the Strike Eagle. I don't think it's the best option out there. I do a lot of paper punching/ load development , so I like a bit more magnification . The best scope I've owned is the Nightforce SHV 5-20. Now I'm not happy with my scopes unless they equal the SHV.:) Having said that , I have a Sightron Stac 3-16 that I'll try on my MV. Guess I'm a fool though as it only cost $677...:)

I was looking at a Zeiss for mine. Want some decent magnification. Haven't decided what route to go yet though.

What are you going to use the MV fore
Hunting?
Long-range varmite hunting ?
shooting paper ?
All of the Above

I still like Leopolds in 3x9 for hunting

I do a lot of coyote hunting and long range . But was going to keep my mv a mid range shooter. I know vortex makes good glass as I own several of there scopes. I have my viper vortex hslr on a larue qd mount kicking around. Just thought it be to much and to heavy for mid range work.
