Hi all,

I am fairly new to the world of firearms, and I'm seeking some advice/suggestions.
I would like to buy a .223 Bolt Action Rifle with plans to only be using it at the range, for distances up to 200 yards (maybe 300).
Hopefully this would be good enough to enter in some NOOBIE competitions as well.
I would like to spend no more than $600 (pre tax), and ideally less.
Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Brad

I bought the Remington 700 and added a few things to it. Base price for the rifle was $600.00.

I've got a Savage axis with a Vortex diamondback 3.5-10x50 up top. First time I had it to the range I threw together some very generic handloads, just to function test the rifle, 55gr campro projectile, once fired federal brass, Remington 7 1/2 primer, and 24.5grs of IMR 4895 and the damn thing printed a 0.635" centre to centre group at 100 yards.

My vote would be look for one used, get a used scope if it doesn't come with one, I've got a magwedge picatinny rail and Warne rings on mine, and did the super simple DIY trigger job with the spring trimming. I also added Rockite to the forend of mine and made sure the barrel was totally free floated. The rockite sturdies it up and adds a little weight.

I got my rifle new, I believe $399 for the stainless (they go for less used of course,) my scope was used, $250 shipped, my rings were like $70 taxes and shipping in from Amazon, and my rail was around $55 taxes and shipping in I believe. The trigger work took 15 minutes including disassembly and reassembly, and the box of rockite was around $6 and is enough to do at least two if not three stocks.

i love my Savage .223 Hog Hunter, nice trigger, barrel is much heavier, metal back up sights, and very accurate. I paid 469.00, now they have gone up a bit.

My buddy bought a Remington 783 in .223 today from Cabelas for around 450.00 c/w scope with a staff discount coupon, and 40.00 rebate. Action and trigger are not as nice as my Savage, but a hell of deal and it has a detachable magazine.

Lots of Savage haters out there but I love mine.

Ruger M77 VT is worth a look as well, I brought one for my wife but it tends to be my go to for up to 600 yard informal target shooting-its a real tack driver.

The hog hunter was my second choice. The only issue i had was the non detachable magazine. I ended up putting the rifle into a MDT chassis anyways so it was a moot point.

Ive beenvery happy with Savage. I have a 10TR, a Mark II, and a 93 22 mag, along with the model 11. No issues here, and I feel there is lots of value in thier rifles.

Me as well, this is where I am going this winter for a stock upgrade.

I wanted the threaded heavier short barrel, and oversized bolt knob.

I bought a 783 223 rem for 400 bucks with scope ,, scope is junk however with a good scope it shoots 5 shot groups in less than a inch ,,, what more could you ask for in a inexpensive centerfire rifle ,, boyds makes wood stocks for the 783 at least it's not a savage and will shoot with the best of them

What does "at least it's not a Savage mean"?

Do you think the new 783 is better? I tried the action and trigger on a 11 it was way better than the unproven 783. Just trying to understand how the comparison was made?
