Alberta ban on spear hunting after American hunter kills black bear

Well said .... and the celebrating and face painting by the couple turned me off.

Probably not the smartest thing to post YouTube video of any kill we had the same thing happen on Haida Gwaii with the black bears
Wen the locals Seen a hunter shoot a black bear shot 5 times and can see and hear the hunter and hunting guid laughing it left a bad taste in everyone's mouth now there's no bear hunting on Haida Gwaii

I seen the video. I don't celebrate like tat. but that's just me. I don't think I would ever spear hunt, but hats off to him for even attempting it. takes a lot of balls. to ban spear hunting over a video is silly, disgusting and stupid. eroding away at freedoms is what it is. traditional archery is next. I find it stupid that the Alberta government wants to even investigate the incident.

Sounds like this guy took up a gun antis challenge and are now shock someone actually did it.

That's hilarious. I can't remember where exactly I read it but I remember some BS like "lets see a hunter use a spear"

Of course he had to catch it on video which he ought to have known would cause ####- no sympathy there.

Circumstances don't sound too sporting either but I'm not a hunter.

Using a spear to kill a bear, or rather sticking a spear in a bear and leaving it to eventually die, then celebrating while it suffers, is in my opinion, a very stupid thing to do.
The uproar created by social media is another nail in the coffin of sport hunting.
Any thinking person should have figured out what would happen, after the video was released to the media.

I agree. An article on CNN said he came back the next day to find it dead. Baiting a bear to come into your camp, sticking it and letting it run away, then finding it the next day and dancing the jig on video is not my idea of hunting.

Another friggin' thread on this???

This "ban" is just a BS knee-jerk reaction to an "Anti-Hunter" outcry over the video... this guy is FAR from the first to spear a bear... it has been done dozens of times, effectively, lethally... he just had to go and put it on YouTube... and another pizz-ant politician is going to "grand-stand" on the issue and act shocked and horrified... the fact is that it was a lethal kill... and many bears have run further after being lung shot by .300 Magnums...

And what is all the criticism about because he got excited after the throw... of course he did... he practiced for months and invested a lot of money into the attempt... he could have taken the easy way out and used a rifle, but he choose a very difficult route to a goal... and having achieved the goal, he was understandably elated... critics, give it a rest.

I support everything Hoytcannon says. I hit a 350lb Black bear broadside through both lungs with a 300winmag at 40 yards. I was using a 200grain accubond. That goddamned bear ran 280 yards straight through the toughest , most impenetrable bush I have ever tried to get through. I was (and still am ) shocked at how far he made it with a softball sized hole out one side with lung tissue spread out over a 15-20 foot swath where the bullet hit. Killing a tough animal with less than a 100 yard post-impact dash is harder than it looks.

Waiting for someone to best him using a tactical tomahawk...maybe hide in the bait can and pop out lol

I know a guy in Bella Bella BC who dropped out of a tree with a home made shear on top of a bear
he got banged up pretty good by the bear but he got the bear the old way now that's hunting

You would think that the immediate negative reaction from over 200,000 members of the general public would be a wake up call to this supposed hunter and the knuckle draggers who support him. Most hunters are not thrill seekers out to prove something and those of us who have worked hard to promote safe, ethical and humane hunting practices are just as appalled by such stunts as the non hunting public. Tell this jackass and like minded individuals to go get a job in a slaughterhouse to get their kicks and come back if and when they ever grow up.

How do you "hunt???"

What do you hunt???

What is your weapon of choice???

^this

It's funny how the typical anti hunter argument in hinting video comments is that hunting with a firearm is unfair and cowardly and people should be forced to use primitive methods to hunt. Now someone posts a video of themselves spear hunting and all of a sudden its barbaric and archaic to usr a spear. The hypocrisy here is over the top. Its obvious there is no pleasing these people. Even with a full hinting ban they would go find something else unreasonable to make their "noble cause". I can see it now "Taking pictures of animals is wrong because they can't consent. Everybody should be forced to use paint and canvas, not these high capacity aitomatic digital cameras."

Hunting with a bow MAY be viewed by some as a step down from harvesting game with a spear. When you think about it bows just propel miniature spears....just sayin.

Well as though the NDP needed a reason to ban aspects of hunting. We, as a group, need to be cognizant of how we portray ourselves. There are no shortage of people who want to see an end to legal hunting...don't help them.

So if the government decides to ban spear hunting in Alberta, who does the ban apply to? Would an aboriginal person lose the right to traditionally hunt with a spear in Alberta?

hunting is hunting weapons are your choice kills are both good, bad, fast, and slow there is know one I believe that can say they have shot at and killed every animal instantly. We can't know or understand this guys way of thinking, not sure if he was trying to prove something to him self are others! But I do know as a hunter I can understand and respect what he has done takes training, practice, and a lot of effort! here in BC we can't bait so that part is different but training, practicing, effort and a lot of Balls all come into play your don't get something for nothing. I believe that as hunter we respect other's choices and way of hunting, as to the forgoing quote please tell us your tails of destruction. THE FXXCKING GUY did it lets see you try!

here is the point (qouted from Norm Gunter's toronto sun article link above)

What troubles me most about Bowmar’s kill is the way he revels in the killing. There is no obvious appreciation or respect for the animal. And there should be!!!
(emphasis all me)
