If the original wood is nicely finished it would look good...and it sort of has that AK shape anyway, I think the pistol grip alone would give it more of an AK look if that's what you're after.
 
Its funny there is this Canadian complex of AK47 obsession, like a forbidden fruit. The type 81 is a fine platform with a reasonable history of service in volume.
The reaction of North Americans seeing a type 81 is much like when I observe British friends seeing the SAN for the first time, they find it ugly because they haven't really seen much of it growing up and keep comparing it to things they are used to.
Or imagine showing Jeremy Clarkson a beloved NA pickup truck, puke at first sight.

Aks are cool and brutish looking. Only thing ugly about the T81 is that grenade spigot and those tacky side panels on the folding stock...maybe it's a tad long looking but whatever.

Ehh... Personally I like the folding stock and the grenade 'spigot'. Shame and beauty are in the eye of the beholder...
