Sorry for the dumb question. will the radio work with walkie talkies? I was going to get oen for work Or am I better off with the $19.99 version?

Thank you Hillbilly

So far we have tried ours with Cobra, Garmin and Uniden and have had no problems at all getting them to talk to each other. We also tried Midland or Motorola and had no issues but I can't for the life of me remember which one it was. I know it was one of those two though.

for chirp user here my list

download link
sysoop.blaucloud.de/index.php/s/pQJkaFlF12Yi4Pq

load your radio
use chirp import file .CSV format save.csv

save it to your radio...

Quite a list. Where are you located?

Judging by the programmed call signs I'm going to guess Quebec.

The UV-5R have 128 programmable slots. I used the radiofreeq template to program mine, with some modifications.
I removed all the UHF marine channels and added some MURS and GMRS channels with a mix mash of tone codes for a bit of diversity.

You can also search the TAFL for local frequencies to tune in to (or to avoid talking on by accident)

Because the frequencies are user selectable, power is above 2 watts and the antenna is removable, a radio license is required for transmission in Canada with these radios.

true, but to much internet police . not really top priority stuff. if your not a HAM then stick to the FRS and GMRS frequincys and say the LADDs

Well out in the woods or during an emergency myself and others will be using our radios for sure at full power and whatever frequency.

Anyone else done distance tests on these?
And what is better for range? An FRS channel or the GSM/FRS dual channels?

My limited amount of testing so far,,,using a legit Nagoya 771 antenna.
Hunt camp, walked 600m, perfectly clear.
Suburban setting, wife in the house and me in the car, already breaking up by 600m.

I can open repeaters 10km plus with a full quieting signal on 2 meters. Being in a car surrounded by metal will definitely attenuate your signal. I'm using a Comet magnetic mount antenna on my pickup. HUGE improvement.

Coming back from Lethbridge last Friday we were getting about a kilometer car to car using 2 watt Baofeng UV 3r radios on 144.500 in the middle of nowhere. These have nowhere near the performance of my 8 watt Boafeng TP.

Try with the stock antenna. It could be an issue with the 771 and the frequency you are using.
Also double check you are not in low power mode.

With the rubber ducky antenna in thick, hilly bush, I was able to get 2.29 km, measured by GPS.

Edit: Also try your squelch setting, you may have it set way to high. I have mine at 3.

Countless reviews, on countless different sites. *YouTube and Google will set you free!*

You don't have to wait for a Gunnie to give you his 2 cents but there are good bowstrings out there. These have been around for awhile, so you can easily learn the good, bad and ugly.
(But since you asked: Here's an opinion from a Gunnut that has bought 23 of these so far: The 'Bad' and the 'Ugly' are laughable when you consider the price.)

-3800mah battery: YES!
-Baofeng programming cable: 100% YES!
-Antenna upgrade (Nagoya 701, 771, Pryme AL-800, etc): YES! (But don't toss the original. When you don't need the extra distance, the longer antennas are a real PITA on a hip-worn radio.)

Lots of good reviews on youtube!
