Review - Vortex Razor HD gen II 4.5-27x56

While I don't own a Gen II Razor, my AMG showed up last week. Its an amazing looking scope, unfortunately I don't have mounts to get it on my gun and go hunting. Glass is clear, turrets feel great, it's much lighter than the Gen II I held in the store, no tunneling. Like I said though, I haven't had the chance to mount it up and see how it tracks or anything like that yet but my initial impressions are great!

Quick question.

I'm looking to upgrade. I currently have a Razor HD 5-20 EBR-2 MRAD. I like vortex and feel very comfortable with a company that has such a good warranty.

I'm struggling to choose between a used S+B 5-25 PMII P4L for roughly $3100 or to buy the Razor GenII stated above in the review.

Is the S+B glass really worth the loss of such a great reticle like the EBR-2C? I'm not really worried about weight. One has a transferable lifetime warranty, the other has no warranty.

The PFL is still a good reticle, however I'm used to the EBR-2C

Used S+B (cheaper $3100) or new Razor Gen II (more expensive 3449 + taxes)?!? Thats the question haha

If you run over to Snipershide or Sniperforums, lots of guys are now running the Gen2 Razor instead of the S&B 5-25. Glass quality of the Razor is right up there with the best of the best according to all the reviews I've read. Like you said, the only downside to the Razor is it's weight. I personally have no hands on experience with the PMII but have read so many reviews it would make your head spin. If you like Vortex, go with the Gen2, It's a considerable step up from the Gen 1 Razor.

The vortex gen 2 is on my short list of what new scope I'm going to to put on my new build. Something is holding me back and I can't put my finger on it. I have a good budget to spend on my glass and just can't decide which way I want to go. I already own a s&b pm2, premier heritage, bushnell xrs, and a few nf. I want to try something different and so far it's between this scope and the kahles k624i. I don't think there's a wrong choice but never have handled the kahles leaves me dragging my feet on dropping the coin on it.

the K634i gets lots of great reviews. But I had also read of some quality control issues with earlier models.
The new ATACR 7-35 sounds excellent as well
I wish I could look through them all side x side including the Tangent Theta
Maybe Precision Rifle Blog will do an updated high end comparison

I ended up going with the tangent theta. Best scope I've ever seen

Thanks for the reply. Your correct about my head spinning with all these reviews. Everyone has there own opinions.

I'm several months into owning the Razor II and I do find myself simply enjoying the Razor more and more and, yes, I often shoot it side by side with my S+B and with my NF. Other than weight (yes, it really is heavy ) I have yet to find something not to like about the Razor.

OK, you sold me on it, time to get a Razor II.

Your "NF ATACR 7-35x56 F1 Mil-R" on the other thread also enticing, maybe next time unless the S&B and TT become reasonably priced..

Well, I haven't yet formed a final opinion but comparing my Razor II to my ATACR I am leaning towards the following :- Glass (NF) Reticle (Razor) Turrets (Razor) Weight (NF). I have long been a S+B fan but now it isa toss up between which of Razor II or ATACR goes on 'best' gun. S+B PMii relegated to 3rd string.

The PRS blog from 2015 certainly agree with Razor II and ATACR taking top 2. Pricing wise found the Razor several hundred less than ATACR so for now RII top choice. Start "CHEAPEST", move up from there :)

Read S&B is coming out with less costly models with less features but similar glass quality.

I've looked through the Kahles but I've never had access to one long enough to write a review. They are (obviously) very well regarded and perhaps before I bought the Razor Gen II I would have assumed them to be the better scope but all assumptions are off the table now.

I shot a 338Lap rifle with k624i at 830 yards and it was a breeze... image was so clear and bright. I much prefer their left hand turret design as well as the parallax adjustment over anything else out there.

GenII Razor and the ATACR are going to have a big presence in the PRS Finale stats again. It seems like every other scope there was one of those two. Lots of Kahles, but I think they will be in 3rd. again this year.
