Is it just me or has vortex become garbage?

Keyboard warriors

it really boils down to whatever works for you, since it is your time and money. Sounds like you've had a really good experience with vortex, wish I could say the same. In the end I don't wish anyone misfortune, and that's why I don't recommend something I personally cant trust. Not a keyboard warrior, just someone who has been burnt by crappy scopes...

Nice to see gun owners coming around...... I was a vortex guy as well......

The first three I bought were flawless....... then one crapped out and that was OK....... #### happens....

Then the subsequent ones I bought all crapped out over time....... even some straight out of the box.....

I now have NO vortex scopes and won't be buying another one......

Their warranty is excellent..... but I got tired of using it, and I got tired of them telling me I torqued the rings too tight..... I use a calibrated wrench, and have never had issues with any other brand...... this seems like their standard excuse...

Scope on a budget = Nikon...... same warranty, great glass and will do what you need it to and won't let you down when you need it...

Scope for high quality= leupold or Zeiss........ same as above with nicer glass

I think their "no questions" warranty gives them a ton of sales. There is probably so much markup that they can send you 5 new units and still make money, as there most likely is a lot of markup and not worth it to them to have someone fix them. Plus they could probably part out the old ones.

Possibly but the glass is still nice and turrets are repeatable , never had a hard time shooting the PST out to 1000 then dial down to 500 then dial down to 100 then back to 1000 , they where all hits . They perform just as good as my 3000$ nightforce so far the new version (GEN2) will be even an improved version of the first one .

I don't think so. I believe the Canadian military is using the Unertl 10x USMC ATM on their C3A1's. I'm not sure what they use on the McMillan Tac-50’s.

US military use a mixture of Schmidt & Bender PMII's, US Optics, Nightforce and Leupold Mark 4's.

None are using Vortex that I'm aware of, but I could be wrong of course.

And no, military and law enforcement do not use Nikon. My point is that the $600-$800 Nikon is more reliable than the $1000 or more Vortex. Yes, Vortex have awesome warranty. The problem is, you basically have to expect to use the warranty.

Yes exactly, I think Nikon probly is close to glass quality as all the big names probly just not built as tough .nightforce has the thicker tubes out of all of them , if you ever have a chance when your in a gun shop hold in your hands the vortex razor gen 2 it's even heavier then the nightforce lol .

Think of it this way, for the longest time I thought Dodge Caravans were #### because you heard of twice as many problems as with them than the Chevy Venture, but then you realize they sold 6 times more Caravans and the quality is actually better.

I think that is the case with Vortex.

Well said

I'd like to know what the sales volume is on low $$ vs high end. Is it truly worth it for a company that produces a great high end scope to tarnish there name by putting out truck loads of crap? I'm sure the crossfire to razor ratio is pretty high....

I get the whole you get what you pay for mentality, I do. But I have personally seen high end vortex scopes freshly installed on rifles fall apart. I have never seen this with any other competing scope manufacturer. Why is that? Perhaps lemons? We all know they are around with everything. all I know is that I'm not alone and it seems like they have a higher failure rate than most other names.

I just like what you get out of a viper PST for the price

This is the attraction. Good value when you see what features you are getting. If it craps out, they send you another one. If you want something better or a more famous name, you spend more.

PST for my needs, is a good fit for the price paid. A Sightron STAC, may be even better for the money.

This will be my third PST and never had an issue , great glass and function and never had to use my warranty .

its funny people mention the quality of glass in the PST.

I have a early FFP 4-16 from back when they retailed for $1000, and through the vortex dealer system i paid $280

Its been good to me, very clear, holds zero, no issues.

Recently when my friend bought his and it had all those issues, I looked through it, it was not very clear. not even remotely on par with mine... then he mounted it it and it #### the bed.
When the replacement came and it was just as fuzzy as the first (500m sign test) we went down to the store to exchange it. we looked through 3 more and they were all not clear. At $1500 we expected clear optics, hence why he returned it and bought a nightforce.

This year I found out about box tests for checking repeatability of dials.... and sure as #### my PST FFP can't pass one better than 50% of the time. lots of users said even razors sometimes fail.tat doesn't mean I can't wont use the dials... but I avoid it when ever possible now.

Point is I think this thread has lost a bit of focus

I know vortex had a lot of good years of good optics for fantastic prices.

I am intrested in is hearing about vortex purchased in the last 18 months and comparison of those same model, but older generation vortex optics I want to hear other opinions on this to see if It's just me that thinks vortex has jumped the shark, or most people with experience with vortex new and old that think so too.
(much like bushnell jumping the shark and offering optics that had visible prism break and that were dark as midnight for leupold prices around 2010 cumulating with the only viable high end optic they even offered anymore being the 6500 elite which was not on par with its similar priced competitors)
