ATRS modern hunter?

Yeah man I love it so far.
Always thought it was funny how atrs made a side charger after
They carried asa for a while, they look very similar

They also had a DPMS LR308 target rifle that they sold off at the same time they cleared out their ASA stuff. I remember Rick getting a lot of flack when he considered a slick sided receiver with no dust cover. I was one of those opting against no dust cover. Which coincidentally is how the LR308 is setup. The Modern hunter appears to be based off the gen 1 DPMS LR308. I suspect this is also what the mag/feed geometry was based on. The gen 1 LR308 is a commercial grade target AR308. I own a LR308 so am stating this from experience. Pmags for instance base their mags off the KAC SR25/LMT MWS geometry. Both of which have served as DM rifles in combat.

So I've ordered a MH in .308. I'll test it myself to see what's what. The concept of a highly accurate NR packaged up in a form factor similar to an AR10 is of significant interest to me.

I am smart enough to know one doesn't put 87 octane into a high compression engine. Likewise, using premium grade hard tip match quality handloads in the MH when the manufacturer indicates the rifle wants match grade ammo is not a difficult concept to grasp for anyone with an IQ over 85.

WRT to the notion that the rifle is expensive, that is an indisputable fact, however in the context of match grade build quality and when comparing apples to apples, the value proposition is not out of line with the market.

Am I taking a chance of money spent on missed expectations? Maybe. However, I will never know unless I try. I've used ATRS on an AR build in the past so I'm familiar with the fact of their high quality precision work, so my confidence is high that I will not be disappointed and the odds of getting a high quality rifle are strongly in my favour.

WRT to all the negativity, this is not uncommon when one steps into the realm of products that step somewhat beyond the practical reach of the unwashed masses whether it be luxury cars, double rifles, off shore fishing boats, or high end mechanical watches. The "I can't afford it, therefore it must be ####" mentality is pervasive in our society, but I don't subscribe to that form of word of mouth arms length bull####. I've had a couple of missteps over the years playing with expensive products, but by and large, one gets what one pays for. I do research, but I don't personally offer up opinions unless and until I have first hand experience. Likewise, unless someone does have first hand experience, their opinion is not valid and simply offers up an unqualified anecdote that provides an avenue to be explored where possible to get to the actual source to see if it is real or just noise. If the trail leads to heresy then it can quickly be dismissed - we see a lot of that on Internet forums.

The buck stops with direct real world hands on experience and facts, so we'll see what's what when I take delivery and wring out the product for myself.

Good stuff. I look forward to seeing your 3 round groups. It's a wealthy person that can afford to buy the MH. I will live vicariously through you guys.

Well made direct impingement guns (quality ar-15's & ar-10's) are quite capable of sub moa.

I wonder why the MH just isn't equaling that ar-like sub moa accuracy. Could it be due to a design difference?

I wonder if it has anything to do with the gas system design putting pressure on the barrel, I know this idea has come up before but if I were a betting man...

Good info here. I really wanted a Modern Hunter, but I was definitely gonna feed it Hirtenberger 7.62 to offset costs.... Anybody tried this?

Yup, I had mixed results with mine, approx 1.5 MOA ish with it, closed to two more often, There's a thread floating around on here (black and green precision i think) where a guy crimped his rounds before shooting with much better results.

I think many of the poor accuracy reports have more to do with a lot of the guys who buy these seem to be stretching their finances to the limit and don't understand that they need to feed the rifle match grade ammunition to get good results. The ones that do understand that are probably incapable of shooting sub moa with any rifle you put in their hands.
My $2000+ AR will shoot sub moa with Black Hills match but with American Eagle black box it shoots around 1.5-2moa with the average being closer to 2 moa with the odd lucky group around 1.5, the MH and MV will be no different. Ammo choice and shooter skill play a lot more into results than simply buying a $3500 rifle.

The lack of positive reports also probably comes from all the haters jumping all over any reports that are posted. When people post results and are immediately flamed because they aren't sub moa even though they explained that they were only using brand C mediocre grade ammo it discourages others from posting anything.

I'm frustrated with the lack of proof of accuracy potential but I'm sure that if I owned one and spent some time doing a little load development I'm sure I could find some loads that would shoot sub moa. Once I hear more positive results regarding reliability I'll probably order a MV. Worst case scenario I put it on the EE and sell it for more than I paid for it :p

I have, but I maaaaay have changed the barrel to something a little more agreeable to surplus... She has eaten Norc and Hirtenburger without issue.

agreed ^^^

I have run some Hirtenberger through mine and it shoots it reliably. Accuracy is fair but in all fairness surplus ammo is not intended for shooting small groups.
With the Federal GMM 168 gr ammo it shoots 3/4 MOA pretty reliably. Hopefully this spring I can get some more load development done and really see what this rifle is capable of.
I too was entertaining the idea of a POS barrel for just blasting, thinking of a 20" DPMS because they are cheap and keep the CFW barrel for serious shooting.

Not a bad idea. I'm curious to see how my "pos" barrel performs with some of my hand loads. It's supposed to be warm this weekend so hopefully I can make it out to the range.

I did some research. .. you are right, the asa side charging system looks really nice !

It does have a pretty nice side charge system, however with the opening you get blasted with gasses in the face with every shot. There was definitely some inspiration from their design however.

Mine does just fine. Hoping to get out this weekend when it's warm to do more of the same.

This is a snippet from a customers CGN post that I believe was deleted due to the flak he received. Thank you to the great shot who originally posted this group.

I couldn't be any happier..... The rifle is awesome ! accuracy is up to par...

Awesome, glad to hear!

That sums it up in a nutshell. There are many who who have told me they aren't willing to post their groups because of that.

Wow, nevermind the rifle, if this is real, that really bothers me.

http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1226815-Stolen-Valour

You know.... I was just thinking about that really stupid #### the other day from waayy back in the day on here, glad I'm not the only one that remembers it lol.
My 2 personal faves were "I shot a **** point blank with a Colt .45 and he did a cartwheel in the air"
And the other was "I shot lots of cows with my 50bmg and they flew 20-30 feet from the impact".
Buuulllllllshhhhiiiittttt.

And the sad thing is, there is a niche market of people that literally have no clue that are being exploited. They think if it's the most expensive it's gotta be THE BEST.
Well maybe it isn't that sad I guess. Pathetic maybe.

I did. I lost lots of money on my Hirtenberger ammo. I bought 3 crates and my modern hunter wouldn't shoot them. Light primer strikes about 60% of the time. Sooo glad I got rid of that pos.

Sorry to hear that you lost money on the Hirtenberger ammo, but glad to hear you got rid of it.

Who buys 3 crates without ever testing the ammo in the rifle? And straight in the manual "ATRS does not support the use of corrosive, or low quality, or off-shore surplus ammunition."

The fact of the matter is, I won't call Hirtenberger low quality, cause it's not. It's good ammo for what it was designed for, which is to run in MG's. The hard primers are intended to handle the rigours of full auto, and be struck by a much stronger spring/firing pin combo.

The hunter runs a Timney AR10 competition trigger, that was never any sort of a secret, to most people that is a selling feature...
