I would think that SIG would enter their 716 DMR G2 . It's a piston system and accuracy is said to be sub .5 moa. Back a ways it appeared that SIG had won a Canadian contract, although other sources quoted LMT as the winner. That being said.... The Czech Army cancelled a SIG 716 DMR order in 2014 after they found that the barrel life was not what was claimed along with a high break down rate. They had ordered 238 guns and cancelled this.
I would actually hope that Remington would enter something based of their GII AR308 instead. It's currently sold as a DPMS GII but it's Remington. With a 16" medium heavy SS barrel you can hit 8 pounds with a modern handguard. Remington also now markets the GII as the R-25 GII with the slogan "The ultimate modern hunting rifle". It's 7.5 to 8 pounds with a 20" SS fluted medium contour barrel.
The LMT is a great rifle. But it is heavy. These are DM rifles not carbines but... weight is a concern, especially since some of these competitions have weight requirements that are very tight for a regular AR308 rifle. The HK G28, I don't think it's as accurate as a DI such as KAC, or LMT but... it's accurate enough and reliability is said to be excellent. Especially in sandy environments. Likely this is what won over the American contract.
I wouldn't rule Armalite out of this either. Their SASS ran against the KAC in the previous American contract competition. Some have stated it won, but Armalite didn't have the security for their facility that was mandated. I don't know if that's garbage or not. I do however know that the original and very heavy Canadian AR10T (DND) with the 24" Lothar Walther barrels 1:11.25 twist are tack drivers. Heavy as heck, especially with the badger ordnance handguard, but they really do shoot exceptionally.
The FN Scar 17 may also be a contender.
Always interesting to see what's on the table and who wins.
Personally, I think Remington has to bring a GII to the table. Then it will get really interesting. If nothing else, I'd like to see how it does!
