HaHa! Thanks for your reply! Good one!
This is a toughie for me. They're both like the ugly younger siblings of a couple of my favourites...the 366 Wagner and the 45-70. Now, if I was going to choose between those two (and I really wouldn't want to) I would have to keep the old Kraut metric in the safe than the 45-70. And to say that hurts a lot because I love the 45-70 and shot my first deer with it.

So if I look at the two pretenders in question, the not quite cool enough 35 Whelen and the overgrown revolver cartridge 444 Marlin, I'd come down on the side of the Whelen. The 444 just hasn't got what the 35 has in the Sectional Density department. The Whelen is the all around superior choice (I think I puked in my mouth a little typing those words in any context) to the 444.

If it was down to one gun left in my safe then the 35 would stay. But if I had other good hunting rifles id keep the 444 just because I like the marlin action for a handy bush thumper.

haha! Thanks for your reply! Good one!

The 35 Whelen offers good performance on heavy game even though Jack O'Connor wrote in The Rifle Book (p.246, 3rd edition) "there is little excuse for it now - because of the better 338 Winchester Magnum round." :p

I like the Whelen and have had several... I would definitely choose it over a .444 in an "either or" scenario... but I have abandoned the Whelen in favour of a pair of .350 Rem Mag's, mostly because I prefered the platform of one rifle and the wood on the other.

a very good bear medecine ...

Well Just to let everyone know! I sold the Marlin 444! Sad to see it go! But can't keep them all!
Yay me...I bought it...oh yah..uh...uh...uh.
I couldn't decide so I went ahead and bought a 35 Whelen too. I'm keeping them all...their mine I tell you....mine....mine...mine (crazed eye look)

I'm getting very anxious to take my new Whelen hunting, it is certainly a step up from my old reliable Whelen.
The old fella ( a Rem. Mod.30 ) has been in our family since the 1960s, I have loaded for it since a teenager and its probably accounted for more one- shot kills than all my other rifles put together.

The new Whelen is a Legendary Arms Professional with like the old one wears a 1.5-5 Leupold and field ready is about 7.5 lbs.
It has a removable brake so I will have to see how it feels to shoot compared to my old Whelen which is 2lbs.+ heavier.
As much as I do like the old rifle this 70 yr. old kid is going to enjoy packing the new one...

Well bought a Bell & Carson Stock to put on the 35 Whelen!
Feels better, fits better! What do you think?

Thanks Jay! Your scope is looks low! Must have low scope rings on? Like them? I have a set of telleys I could put on, but think they would be to low, Im happy with the Leopold setup now! But might try them out??

I can't remember if they are low or medium, but they are Leupold QD rings.

Cheers
Jay
