Reboring 30-06 to 9.3x62

Finally picked it up today, got a tour of his equipment and shop, showed me the machine he built to cut gain twists, so cool, so stoked to get my rifle back too!!

Nice! I'll give him a call Monday to see if mine is done. It's been nearly a year since I've sent it out.

Where are the pics man?

Fair enough...

Ron's gain twist starts at about 1:20 ratio and finishes at about 1:12 he said, I'm planning on shooting 250 grain matrix bonded or perhaps 270's. I fired one round on his property to check it out when I was out there...

I cannot wait to shoot it (again) probably sight it in next weekend, I just put on my prostaff 7 in 2.5-10x50 with some interesting quick release steel rings (30mm) that came with it, eventually I'll put a higher end scope on it, picked up two new 9.3x62 mag's to feed it. I can't find a manufacturer name for the rings, but they seem really well built, I suspect they would have cost upwards of $150 new but no idea who made them.

My first Steyr, big contrast on how smooth the bolt is next to most of everything else I've had, the Tikka in the same I caliber I recently sold was close though.

I can tell you that the Matrix 270 bonded performs very well on big game. No trick at all to start it out at close to 2600 fps, shoots flat enough to use point blank to 250 meters.

Here's one that took care of a really big grizzly with a single shot.

Tremendous expansion, and retained more than 90% original weight.

This is pretty typical performance on all the game I have taken, or seen taken, with Matrix hunting bullets in any caliber.

Does Matrix still sell 9.3 bullets? I thought the new owner was focusing on target bullets for the time being. My plan is to run 286 Woodleighs through mine

The website shows that 1000 pcs is the minimum order. That's not for an individual, I think.
I got 200 pcs from Marshal when he was still in crofton, Vancouver island. If 1000 pcs is indeed the minimum, I will switch to A-Frame

Well, I am a strong advocate and user of Matrix bullets, but will not be ordering any at all if 1000 pcs is the minimum.

Always ordered them 50 or 100 at a time from Marshal. Just sent him an email. Hopefully that is a typo..... 100 would make sense.

A Frame and Woodleigh make fine bullets as well, but hate to have to buy from outside the country when we have such an excellent product right here.

It's not a 1000. Price is $75CAD/50 bullets before tax and shipping. He's just tooling up for another batch and needs a 400 more bullets on order to begin another run. I'm contemplating whether to by the Woodleigh or Matrix. I'm thinking of using the woodleighs in 375 as well, so it would be easier to buy it all from one vendor.

Okay, thanks for the update, Mik.

I have also used the Matrix 375 bullets, and they are an amazingly accurate hunting bullet that expands and holds together just like the 7mm, 308, and 9.3s I have used.

Be sure to at least try one box of 375s. You will be pleased.

That's good news. I didn't know he made 375s. They weren't on the website.

Thanks for the info Ted, I like those numbers, I heard someone with a Tikka was launching 250 grain bullets at 2700, but I think I'd prefer 270's at about 2600, I'm hoping I could get close to your numbers with reloading, but I didn't see that type of ammo on their website, maybe they'll do another batch, what length barrel and twist ratio is your rifle BTW? I believe the factory 286 ammo I have is about 2200fps or I bit under, but I haven't chrono'd in this rifle yet.

I believe my barrel is 20" long which is probably shorter than yours but the slower 1:20 rifling at the start may be more friendly for pressure to reload a bit hotter, I'll have to wait and see I guess.
