Fraud/Theft Nightforce Scopes

I bought a firearm from a old guy in Quebec he wanted a canada post payment the lady at my post office here in alberta was worried and warned me about there rampant fraud reputation.
 
Maybe, but it is a decision I have made to not get ripped off anymore. Quebec is the scam central of Canada and it is a real fact. I know that most are great people, but some have ruined my choice of dealing there.

I think it's more like the Nigeria of Canada, wild west of the internet and Voip
 
The Credit Card Cartel (aka white collar Mafia) make all the rules in their favour.....

Cops don't care......good luck getting the Laval PD to detour from their Timmys run to work your case......You may have better luck with EPD due to your proximity.

Unfortunately I am going to have to agree with this statement. I run one of the biggest paintball online stores in Canada. Sure we have had out growing pains like everyone else. We did find over the years that 95% of the fraud orders came from Quebec and 50% of that were on the same street of apartment buildings. We use a third party company to process our online orders. If everything does not match then it does not get sent out. That goes for any place in Canada not just Quebec. In our first year of the online store we lost about $10,000 of product to fraud. Almost made us say screw the online sales part.
 
maybe not easy but what we were doing in the past when someone was paying over the phone was to wait 3-4 days before doing anything including shipping, people were aware and never been scammed. but that is few years ago ...

The person who owns the CC may not be aware of what happened - if it was one of those tap cards - someone could have stolen the information on the card electronically

Part of the problem today it's a lot easier for the fraudsters to recruit people to work at the banks than it is to hack them. Selling personal information is also a big market. They also steal debit card machines and use the RF receiver in the tap equipment to steal from your card by walking close to you or setting up skimming stations near high volume purchase areas.

A lot of the courier companies employ mostly part time employees in there operations and as drivers. One particular company had 750 employees leave there employment in one year.

The bad guys skim or sell credit information but they eventually need an address to deliver it to. So they will meet the drivers on the road and offer them money to cooperate. Or they will recruit people to work as drivers and then they will target victims who live within the drivers delivery area. Just like the case here the scopes were delivered to a vacant space or an abandoned home. Fortunately most courier companies monitor there drivers by GPS but each driver can deliver hundreds of packages a day and they only get involved if there is no delivery scan or where notified prior that it was a fraud. Also this information goes to a customer service agent first who may not even be in Canada. Most of the courier companies have investigators but they sometimes don't get filtered this info or are terribly understaffed, or overstaffed with the wrong people.

My point is watch your credit card statement like a hawk. Look for purchases then immediate refunds or small purchases in areas you don't frequent.
 
Sickening the Credit card OmniGlomerate throws the merchant under the bus whilst demanding high fees.

As a consumer the convenience and protection of a CC outweighs the free shipping, couple of percentage off from merchants. EMT is only a last resort for a once in a lifetime item.

Won't even go into EE/EMT. Just another disaster waiting to happen in our Global economy full of Nigerian Prince.

you can try this number 1-855-531-7764 it's the number for security screening for contractors. There closely associated with there security department. You can bypass the usual customer service line. Ask them to transfer you to someone in security and that you want report a fraudulent delivery of firearms parts. Tell them that you have a tip for them and you will only speak to a postal inspector or security person. Tell them the value. It might get the ball rolling quicker.

maybe they should only allow customers to ship items to the address on file with the credit card company to prevent these frauds.

This seems to be the way local retailers are headed. I ordered a scope last week online and payment would not go through. So I called the store once they opened and found out it was denied because the shipping address was different from my credit card. Finished the sale over the phone and got my scope. I get merchandise shipped to a family members address so it can be left safely if no one is home, never had an issue before but retailer said that is the way they are trending.
 
I did business with two Co.'s in PQ via credit card.
Both times I was scammed.
Both times my card was also later charged illegally.
Both times I had to contact my bank and cancel my card.
Twice bitten....
I know of Canadian Company's who flat out will not deal with anyone in PQ.
And that was twenty years ago...
Seems that was and still is a good judgement call......
 
To me as a consumer, that is a horrible idea. At a minimum I am able to save $500 a year on shipping costs by shipping to an address which isn't the one on file.

When the card isn't present, it is tough without an additional authorization step. At one point I seem to remember some cards/sites required you to log in to an additional portal... verified by visa maybe?... after the card/cvv info was submitted, but I can't recall coming across one in a very long time.

If you've Netfiled your taxes, then you've seen the one that goes through the major banks.

Side note:

I work in software development and this goes a long way towards explaining the long list of third-party identity verification services many of our clients in investment, loan, and payment processing industries use along with private applicant blacklists.

Off the top of my head, we've seen
Experian, Equifax, Idology, GIACT, KYC Sitecan. Not all operate in Canada and I have no idea the rates they charge, but for the retailers, it's probably worth your time to give their reps (or other ID verification services) a call to find out their rates and services. Doesn't have to save you that many fraudulent high-end scope purchases to be worthwhile.

Edit: Could you guys also use liquor store 2-piece of ID rule by asking for a PAL to check against the CC info against for large purchases? Those scopes are expected to go on firearms after all, and your reasons for checking ID are perfectly reasonable.

Good luck with it but don't expect much. Fraud and people not paying their bills is a well protected industry in Canada, almost encouraged... Its even worse in other industries, and often we know exactly who it is and where the product is sitting.

I don't do online stuff, yet anyway, but asking 2pc ID seems like it would indeed help weed out a few.
 
That's horrible. ... I would post the address on here where they were shipped to. People on here are very helpful. I'm sure someone would go knock on their door
 
Talking about address, with google earth now it can help to get an idea sometimes of what kind of place its shipping to, if it looks sketchy...
 
Lots of suggestions but the simplest thing to do is just to get the buyer to send in ID verification. I was asked to when I ordered a $2k+ DSLR camera online.
 
Sorry to hear about the scam. With the economy circling the Liberal drain, this is unfortunately happening more and more often. I hope the dealers here can get together and come to a common answer so they don't get scammed in the future.

The two bad deals I got ripped off from were from QC. One went pink and the other well.. yeah, still deals here. I won't buy from anyone from QC anymore, not worth the risk.
