Picture of the day

well then they are the 'Deal of the Century' given what little it costs us to have them working on our behalf..... apparently still only getting 200rds/man/yr

I think that's actually part of the equation. With 200rds/yr for practice/hunting/everything... You learn quickly to make them count.

At danger of wandering too far afield of the original intent of the thread, I can't resist posting this:

Ah, for a month in an igloo with the Duchess of Cambridge. Anyhow, old pix of cool military stuff:

Gentlemen of a Certain Age with the Home Guard train with the Ross Rifle. 'Ave at ye, ye Jerry Barstard:

Best use ever for a Ross rifle.

We could have had a slug fest between the Volksturm and the Home Guard and saved the lives of a whole lot of younger men. After the dust up, I'm sure they would have repaired to the nearest Gasthof or pub for a few brews to talk about it over a few brews and a bite.

It s a romantic notion... but wouldnt it follow then - that if they were only issued 50 rounds a year ... they would get so good that they could represent Canada at Bisley? Imagine how good they get with only 25 rounds per man per year? :)

Maybe if Tiger Woods stuck to miniput and a limit of 9 holes a month ... he would be a shoe - in for the masters this year.

Return of the Japanese carrier Kaga ... sort of. Actually the Izumo class 'helicopter destroyer' JS Kaga, commissioned yesterday.

Built for the purpose of destroying helicopters, then? :)

Is the ol' JSDF starting to stretch the definition of "self defence"?

They have either crossed (or are standing on the banks) of that 'Rubicon'....their committment in Afghanistan was quite contentious within Japan and I 'believe' that events in N. Korea have begun some re-thinking on the policy. Not to mention that rearmament always creates jobs.

She is dual role, aircraft or assault ship. Right now she has 28 Helos and half battalion of troops. She is fitted to host 14 VTOL aircraft instead of current complement.

A careful choice of words intended to downplay its offensive capability, especially at the time the program was born, similarly to what happened with the British Royal Navy's Invincible class "through-deck cruiser".

Right now she has zero helicopters, but she will in due course typically operate only as half as many helos as that.

It could be we will see some sort of naval building race between China and Japan. Both are heavily dependent on sea lines of communications for trade and the Chinese are already into a big upgrade of their navy. With the US drawdown in naval strength and presence it seems logical to expect the Japanese to build up their navy to protect their trading interests. The Chinese are becoming very aggressive in the S. China sea which is a threat to trade routes in the area.

Japan has the world's 3rd largest economy and only spends 1 percent of GDP on defence (about the same as us), so there is considerable room for them to move. Interestingly the Chinese and Japanese are major trading partners, something neither can afford to put in jeopardy.

She'll obviously be able to operate the USN version of the F-35 - if they ever get it to work properly.

She looks very much like the Wasp-class amphibious assault ships of the USN.

Look out Pearl Harbor!!!!! :d:d

In a pinch, probably yes. (Though I don't recall seeing any specs on deck weight limits.) But without the ablative deck coating, and with a smaller deck and internal hangar space, it would not be a very effective operator of the F-35B. Not without modification (especially as compared to the America class or an actual aircraft carrier).

Ya gotta wonder why the Rising Sun flag wasn't banned when the Japanese weren't much better than the Nazis when it came to concentration camps, ill treatment of conquered people, POWs, etc. But - they weren't practicing genocide on a massive, state sanctioned scale.

The Rising Sun has a very different historical origin as compared to the Nazi swastika/flag. (And for that matter, a very different post war treatment as well.)

There are limits, for sure. But when you're awash in ammo, and can spend as much of it as you want to hit a target, it can breed some bad habits.

My hit rate in the gopher patch is WAY higher with my bolt guns than with my semi-autos. Not that my bolt guns are spectacularly more accurate (a bit more accurate, sure, but at 50 yards and under, not more accurate enough to really make a difference). No matter how hard I try, I can't resist the urge to make poorly aimed snap shots from time to time with my semis... The back of my mind knows I'll have a follow up, and sometimes those snap shots connect.
