High power scopes?

Lol..... I won't question your marksmanship skills, since I know you practice other disciplines....

That being said, here are some additional "costs".....

1- your time, time is money
2- butchering (either you do it yourself or you pay someone to do it), your time or money..
3- the cost of your .270 setup divided amongst how many deer you shoot
4- time spent scouting and researching
5- peripherals (wrap, knives, tape etc....)

Yes I did leave out a few things :) But My hunting trips are also family camping trips and LR shooting all in one. So I would spend all the money regardless to go out with the fam in the bush for a week.

1- My hunting trips are also the only Vacation I have all year.
2- The wife uses an ancient hand grinder to grind all the meat.
3- My setup was about 1000ish and I never actually took that into consideration. So that just upped my cost a whole bunch...lol...
4- I hunted on private property in Greenwood with everything setup , And My friend who got posted out of comox sent me the coordinates to his hunting cabin he built in the bush when I got posted here so no effort was needed for that one either.
5- I have most of that stuff for the other shooting sport I practice / and all my camping gear, so I wouldn't call that extra costs since I enjoy that stuff more then hunting. . Well maybe the binos :)

As you can see im probably one of the laziest SOB's when it comes to hunting. I spend more time looking for LR shooting spots in the bush...lol... One day If I get posted where I dont know anyone it might suck. But I dont see that happening.

I appreciate more the time spent with my family around the campfire. No WiFi No phones it's pure heaven.

I'm curious how it holds up on that 375. Chinese scopes and recoil don't seem to get along... I just killed a 4.5-14x44 Legend on a 7mm mag Vanguard which isn't a heavy recoil gun.

Yes I was a bit worried about that but so far so good. It's only a 375 and the scope has relatively low inertia.

Otherwise it will make a rather nice fish bat. :d

Im not blocking PM's, CGN Admins blocked my PM access because of too many infractions,But thanks for assuming that I did that,,,lol...

Depends on the day and what stupid meds im on. You might get different answers. lol... Ive been of 6 different mood swing meds some antidepressants ( to help with my G.A.D ) and to top it off some concerta....lol... and all this crap is making me worse by the day according to the wife...

But hey docs know best right ? ...lol...

No they don't. My girlfriend has been struggling with her health lately and my mom hooked her up with a natural path doctor hopefully he can get her feeling better cause the doctor have not done nothing but push pills. Mom had migraines for years that make life #### and the did nothing to help her (farm lady not a crybaby) this guy had her fixed in a week. Don't trust the docs with your life trust yourself and if your struggling take a break and try to keep things as simple as possible one day at a time, being on here is ok if it makes you happy but being outside is so much better.

Seriously dude, I shoot over 5000 rounds a year. lol... A hunting rifles isn't something I use for fun at the range. I got my Cadex for that...lol...

WOW over 5000 rds a year, that makes you ####AVERAGE#####.

Now that is said and done, we are here to promote a family atmosphere of "Canadian Gun Nutz", take a chill pill and relax. Let the adults talk.

The high magnification is used to identify your target. Then power down to appropriate magnification to take the shot. Less movement involved. You already see the animal, chances are its somewhat close and you don't need to take a moment to take your view off the animal to pull out a set of binoculars to potentially alert the animal you're there. I hunt with a 2-10x40 Bushnell Elite 4200 and I've had to power it up on a group of 4 black tail that was only 30 meters away because it was very early in the morning and I couldn't tell if one of them was a buck. Turned it up to 10 power, saw one is a 2x2, turned down to 2 power, and popped him in the lungs. Was quick only took me about 5 seconds to identify it was a 2x2 and that deer didn't have a clue I was there. Pulling out a pair of binos would of for sure alerted him or at least one of the three doe he was with. Using a scope to identify your target is fine. Using a scope to glass a clear cut is not. That's where binos or spotting scopes are much better.

pretty sure in BC we are legally required to have identified it as a legal to shoot animal before you raise the rifle and look through your scope.

His comments did kind of bug me but that is silly on my part I got little ones and I try to get them to be strong and independent and not to look for trouble and help those who want it, words don't hurt actions speak, lol they probably will have trouble in school poor things.

I used a 2.5x10 this year walking a low power is nice a straight 4x is probably perfect many animals I bet are missed by hunters who forgot to turn down the magnification and stumbled onto a good animal on there way to a "good" spot.

I guess the moral of the story is what magnifications you desire is dependant on what type of "hunting" you do.

All around I prefer a good 2.5-8x or under. I don't consider a marksmanship challenge of a long range shot nessisary. I don't need to stoke my ego, I'm all business and I play it by the numbers. The closer the better for me. It increases you chance of a clean kill and you don't have to walk as far to retireve it (which is a plus when you've been walking all day) and... I don't care too much for magnums.

If you plan on sitting in a blind all day and play sniper... I guess that is enough logic to go with something with more power.

Most of my hunting guns carry the generic 3-9x40 scopes, but lately I have developed a taste for fixed power hunting scopes. The primary reason for this is simplicity, and with simplicity comes optical quality.
When an animal comes into view, I hope to have already determined exactly what it is with binoculars, have got to within a distance I am comfortable with and then it is only a trigger pull without any thinking involved concerning adgetry, extra lines and dots or whatever else.
I know my 375 with the fixed 6 is flat out to roughly as far as I should be shooting. It's an excellent mate for me, although in other circumstances wouldn't work as well for others.

You're really trying hard to show your superiority here, why?

This was taken on 24x after a day of busting my ass for miles. Showing that everyone doesn't have to fit in to your weird little boxes.

The "pot / kettle" irony here is kinda funny.

Nice buck.

Not at all, I posted it because it was taken at high power...as per thread topic.

And because I'm tired of the "if you didn't get the job done at 30y with a 2x optic, yer not a hunter" BS.

I, like c-fbmi, have different optics on different rifles. I am quite fond of that excellent 6x42 Leupold, and it sits on several of my hunting rifles.
With this scope mounted on a 270 Winchester [sorry, Douglas, lol] I took my longest shot at game...a one shot success.

My very heavy recoiling rifles wear the 2.5-8 VX III Leupolds, mostly due to their very generous eye relief, but also because that power
range is adequate for 99% of all shots I will take at big game.

4 of my "hunting" rifles wear Leupold 3.5-10 x 40 B&C optics. I am liking these scopes more and more as I use them in the field.
My 308 Norma Mags, and 7mm Rem Mag are the candidates for these, and I have the trajectories sorted out for the B&C Reticule.

Tired old eyes, make the use of optics a basic necessity, so it may as well suit the job at hand for me. D.
