My S&W M&P appears to be an early version, serial number MPX4###, and believe it or not, the trigger is really good. I have done nothing to upgrade, as this auto needs nothing.
I would not upgrade as I like my M&P. Supposing I was looking for a reasonable cost, quality 9mm auto. The candidates would be the M&P 2.0, Sig P320, Glock 17, Ruger American pistol, Beretta APX, FN 509, CZ P10C, & the Remington polymer gun. So many choices...I think that choice might come down to best price, included accessories, and extra magazine costs.
The APX is unproven and like all the other polymer striker fired guns, just another Glock wannabe. The FN 509 is also unproven and has a prohibited barrel length as does the CZ P10C. The Remington RP9 is an absolute abortion with more issues than Time magazine. You're left with the Ruger American(average at best and honestly the SR9 has a far better trigger than the American), the M&P in either generation even though the changes that were made to the 2.0 were either cosmetic or were fixes for problems that existed from the get go(Like the crappy trigger and the "auto forwarding" due to weak magazine springs or a bad slide lock design. The removal of the beavertail is comical and makes you wonder of S&W has a clue what they're doing or are they just trying to offer what they think the public wants). That leaves the 320 which is an alright gun but still a wannabe Glock and it too has issues, and of course the Glock. So the choices are far fewer than you think when it comes to reasonable cost in a quality striker fired pistol from the ones in your list. you make a very valid point regarding support. The 320, the M&P and the Glock are quite well supported whereas the rest are not supported.
ETA: As for the original question of "upgrading" from a gen 1 to gen 2. No, I don't see the benefits.
Before the 2.0 was released S&W shared promo pics of them with a thumb rest but have yet to see it on one.

At $589 it's hard to go wrong with the 2.0. Is it worth the upgrade? Maybe. Other than the slight trigger improvement the aspect I enjoy most about my 2.0 is the aggressive texture on the grip. The 1.0's have a "slicker than snot" grip and I get much more control with the 2.0's grip.
The grip panel slickness can be solved rather quickly with a hobby soldering gun. If you do only the removable grip the gun remains legal in SSP for IDPA shooters. I use skate board tape on the front grip area. Your point is valid though the Ver 2 grip texture is a significant improvement. Where did you see the $589 pricing for the gun? For those who don't own a Ver1 the decision at that price is a no brainer.
Take Care
