so, what's so great about the 308 Win cartridge?

I have a number of .308's, but mostly because of the cool guns that happen to be chambered in it; the cartridge itself leaves me cold. By the same token, I've taken a number of memorable trophies with the cartridge, but I don't particularly care for it for hunting; again, I was using guns that I enjoy shooting, and since they were chambered in .308 that's what did the deed.

The .308 reminds me of an imaginary company that a tool-partner and I dreamed up on a job-site we were on. It was called "Good Enough Electric"...our motto was "We're not just good...we're good enough!" :) That's the .308!
 
If i had to pick just one cartridge it would be a 308 win. Great cartridge for sporting, and target shooting. I know its not the "best", but it does have things going for it. Match grade target bullets, match grade hunting bullets, stout monolithic bullets, cheap cup/core bullets, bulk FMJ bullets, readily available brass, Lapua brass, wide range of bullet weights, low noise, low recoil, great powder selection, great barrel life, bulk ammo, lots of firearms chambered, proven big game performance, light weight rifles, short barrels, and because its just plain old awesome.

The 308 is the reason i have so much money invested in safequeens of different calibers, you shoot them a couple of time and back to the 308, it's like a déjà vu effect... JP.
 
The .308 is a "great" cartridge for "most" people... it has the energy to be effective on medium game up to moose, and is flat shooting enough for typical hunting situations, and is light recoiling AND available in a plethora of platforms... the ammo is plentiful and inexpensive. For most "average" hunters and shooters, that is as good as it gets... for those uber dedicated shooters and hunters, there are many better choices.
 
I've got 3 .308's. A winchester 88, a savage 10tr, and a remington 788. The lions share of moose, whitetail and black bear that I've killed were with the 88. I also have a savage 111 in 300 wm. I've never noted any critters that were "more dead" with the 300 than the .308. Both fun to shoot, both clearly capable of taking anything I can afford a tag for.

The 308 is a great multipurpose round plus it's still available in surplus so it's more affordable to be able to shoot a high powered round as opposed to say 30-06 or 8 mm
 
I place great value in having a gun that does the job with the least amount of kick, because I don't want to flinch and miss at that moment.
That being said, the 7-08 is my favorite, with the 308 close behind. For the 300 yard max hunting I do, there is no tangible advantage to more powerful chamberings and magnums.
 
308 win.
Good for any game in canada.
Many guns both civy and milsurp chambered in oh-ate.
Any crappy tire, walmart or hardware store in bakwater canada has the ammo.

Rem Mod 7 in Stainless/Synthetic.
Shoots most factory ammo sub 1.5"
Love its compact all weather durability.
All for 700.00.
Carried it last season over my Sako Finnlight.
Both great in the 308 chambering. Great Deer /mid range Moose rifle.
 
Just like 30-06, it is accurate, hard hitting and good for most game in Canada. Lots of ammo selection. 308 will be here to stay, just like the other classics. It's a bit vanilla, but I always make sure I have some overlap metrics to keep things interesting. Always have one 308 or 30-06 in my locker.
