This is the fixed handle C8, unless you plan on doing IR, Laser, NVG or flashlight clearing a 3D kill house, why not instead build yourself an old school Nam style "CAR-15 like" rig with a 4x Colt or Israeli optics.
 
Put the original stock and pistol grip back on. C8's are great as is. Get something else to put the KA rails on. Great excuse to buy another rifle.
 
maybe maybe original stock but the pistol grip nope it's staying bcm otherwise I can't shoot it worth anything
question would the 8 inch urx fit with the original sight?

I was thinking of putting a ta33 acog on top of the handke
 
Are these surplus uppers really that great of a deal? Or is it more to appeal to Colt and Diemaco collectors?

Totally understand getting something for the collection, just trying to put my finger on where these lay in the $ value vs collection.

wear is cosmetic only, upper and barrel are pristine inside so yes definitely good value

Hmm you're treating it as another one of your 2017 black gun, I'm hearing the overwhelming feedback saying "don't". IMHO.
It is a Cold War milsurp, which is it's own category of firearms even though CGN doesn't have such a sub forum.

I'm all for modernizing but I wouldn't do anything that's permanent.

It sounds like you want to modify the handguard to fit with the existing FSB? It's doable but I'm not sure it would be worth it.
Don't even think about chopping the FSB.

Since this is a C8 I'd throw a KAC RIS/RAS and throw an EoTech 552 on the rail. JTF ran them that way for awhile.

Yeah they were bought up, I guess there is a subculture of folks into doing guns up old school.

A complete upper with cold hammer forged barrel for $450 bucks? I'd be shocked if you could build one for that, as far as I'm concerned they're exceptional value.
 
The carbine length KAC RAS would be cool, like the JTF special as mentioned by Leg. Really anything that isn't permanent. I decided to leave mine as is. After talking to a couple guys who served when they were current looking at them saying "Wow, that bring back memories." I'm not sure I could bring myself to permanently alter it. I found a used BCM upper that I'll use for messing around with.

yah youre right ill try to find a ras on the ee and ill put the old stock back on

For me it's more about permanently modifying the upper. I don't have a CC stock on my lower. I've got a Vltor that I really like, and I run my lower with multiple uppers so to me the comfort of the stock > correctness. I am thinking about picking up a CC stock for it though, lol.
